Reverse thrust and touchdown sound (or lack of)

Featured Replies

Hello AllI have recently been giving my Posky 747s an outing and after much updating, service packing,FDEing, cfg altering, service vehicles installing and still to be done finding the fix for increasing the ground taxxing characteristics(white knuckles as grip my joystick ferociously(steady)in an attempt to get the mighty beasts to turn) I have been enjoying the experience. However one thing that I am finding a little irksome is after I touchdown I don't actually HEAR the aircraft touchdown and I don't hear a decent reverse thrust sound either, this is making it difficult to know if I have actually hit the deck. Can somebody please tell me what sound settings in FS9 are good for hearing these particular sounds(environment, cockpit)just turning up the engine slider doesn't really seem to help.Is there a sound file you can download to increase touchdown and reverse thrust effects? The sound packages I have used are various ones from AVSIM and the usual FS download sites.Could somebody identify for me the usual sound files used for reverse thrust and touchdown? I could then use sound recorder to boost them.PS all other aspects of the flight sounds are fine.cheers Andy

Andy,A dedicated thrust reverser .wav sound should be included within the specific aircraft's sound folder but can have different names depending on whatever the developer has chosen to name it.Have you had a good look in the aircraft.cfg file in the [GeneralEngineData] section yet ? There should be an entry in there: "min_throttle_limit = -0.25". Take care because this should be a negative value and if this entry as a whole is missing, you will never hear the reverser sound nor will the working reverser system be visible when watching your landing in external view playback mode.I think this could be your "reverser sound" problem because you say that you've already tried different sound folders. The touchdown (and other standard) sounds are very often default sounds not included in the aircraft's sound folder.Have a look in the sound.cfg file in the aircraft's sound folder and check if all file names specified in each "filename=xxxxxxxx" entry are all present and working within the same sound folder. E.g. If you find an entry containing "filename=ABCDEFGH", then a .wav file with the name "ABCDEFGH.wav" must be present within that same sound folder. If no such file is present it will be searched for within the FS9 default sounds. If additionally no such file name can be found within the default sounds then you will simply not hear it.If any dedicated sound file name specified in the sound.cfg is not present within it's own sound folder there's a good chance it will be included in another aircraft's sound folder so you should then do a system search for it and if found, copy/paste it into your aircraft's sound folder. If after all this you still cannot find a missing .wav file then you should try another sound folder all together.Good luck.HansP.S. The reverser system can be activated (only after touchdown) by pressing F2.

Ah!now Hans that's a very informative reply.I will have take a look in the aircraft CFGs as suggested. What I have done is to listen to the various wave files in the relevant aircraft's sound folder in attempt to find the reverse thrust sound, I THINK? I may have found it but can't be sure,so what I will do is increase the volume of this file using sound recorder and see if that helps.PSIts quite easy to find the default 737 (presumably 747)as well RT sound and I wouldn't mind using that because that is loud and impressive as is the default whined down sound on engine shut-down but I have to be sure of what I am replacing with what.Touchdown sounds to are hardly audible as well in the various POSKY 747s I have been flying over the last few days, take-off,climb,cruise etc are fine.Right!its of to look at those aircraft CFGsThanks for your reply I didn't think I was going to get any takers.Cheers Andy

Hello,For the touchdown sound .. you can usually edit (open with notepad) the touchdown effect .. and in the first entries you will find something related to the sound ...EG:

[Library Effect]Lifetime=10Version=1.00Sound=5Sound Param=7[Emitter.0]Lifetime=0.90, 1.20Delay=0.00, 0.00Bounce=0.00Rate=60.00, 80.00X Emitter Velocity=0.00, 0.00
So you can also tests by changing those valors ...For the reverse sounds (intensity etc ..) all depend what sound pack you use ...http://simtube.com/video/3274/POSKY-B747-L...sa-at-MauritiusRegards.bye.gifGus.

Andy,I would expect that the touchdown sounds audible in the cockpit of a real B747, would not be all that loud because of the distance between the cockpit and the main gear, and because of extensive sound proofing used in all modern aircraft. However, for the reverser sounds this should be another matter as all real passengers will be able to tell you. But in FS this is a question of personal taste.Concerning the (usually standard) touchdown-, wind-, ground roll-, gear up/down-, stall warning-, flap movement-, etc. sounds, the following:If you take another look into the aircraft's sound.cfg, usually somewhere near the bottom of the listing, you will find related sections like: [Wind_Sound], [Center_touchdown], [Left_touchdown], etc. Usually quite a large number of separate sections referring to different (default) sounds played under different conditions. These are typically not stored in the aircraft's sound folder itself.E.g. The section [Left_touchdown] can contain the entry: "filename=bmtouch1, bmtouch2, bmtouch3, bmtouch4". In this specific case all four .wav files will be played at the moment of left main gear (4 wheeled bogy) touchdown by a "heavy" aircraft. These are default .wav files located in your main FS9 sound folder. They range from "bmtouch1.wav" to "bmtouch12.wav" and refer to [Right_touchdown], [Center_touchdown], [Left_touchdown] and nose wheel touchdown sounds. I would advise you, just for learning purposes, to have a look at the difference between a Cessna's sound folder and that of your B747's but the overall remaining issue here is that all specified sound files (in the aircraft's sound.cfg) must be able to be found by FS9, either within the aircraft's own sound folder or within FS9's main (default) sound folder.Again, good luck.Hans

What filename it is? Aircraft.cfg or sound.cfg? where do you get this from? I cannot find it.Thanks,Stuart
