Would a 480gtx be overkill

Featured Replies

Just a quick question, would a 480 gtx be overkill for a monitor resolution of 1280 x 1024? This would be for FSX and FS9. Or would I be better of with a 460 gtxCore I7-860 @3.48gb 9-9-9-24Gigabyte UD7thanks for your time. Matt

Simply put; Yes.At a resolution like that, I would look more at the GTX 460. Of course the GTX 480 will always offer more performance, but at that resolution, the GPU will not have as much work placed on it. Personally, I think anything below 2560x1600 or 1920x1200 with higher levels of FSAA is somewhat overkill (unless you prefer lower resolutions with VERY high levels of FSAA). My GTX 285 runs FS9 extremely well at 8xSFSAA/16xAF with max settings at 2560x1600 and a GTX 460 isn't that far behind it.

Thanks for your input, that's pretty much what I thought. 1280 x 1024 is my monitors native resolution, guess the 460 should be a good match. thanks again,Matt

Np.It he end though, the best thing to do is go read some different reviews of both cards make an informed decision. Both have quite a few reviews available to check out. :(

Plan for the future, you might want to get a larger LCD someday.

Thanks for the responses, I ended up purchasing the 460GTX for my Intel machine and it works great at 1280 x 1024 resolution. Unfortunately I only have room for a 19" monitor at the present time. I don't forsee being able to get a larger monitor for awhile
