July 28, 201015 yr Most airliners have an ACARS system, which is a bit like having an internet connection on the aircraft with an email facility that can access data such as weather reports and what runway is in use at an airport and all sort of other useful info. The crew can communicate with their airline HQ via this too. It is one of the reasons why an FMC keypad has a 'space' key, so the crew can type messages. Prior to FMCs and ACARS systems, aircraft used a combination of radio reports and Selective Calling (SELCAL) which is essentially a coded radio so that transmissions can be sent to a specific aircraft if the signal uses the aircraft's unique SELCAL code.SELCAL would flash a light on the panel or emit an audio alert signal when the aircraft was receiving a call, to inform the crew to check it. This was so that they did not have to constantly monitor a radio and could concentrate on doing the newspaper crossword or playing I-Spy whilst on long routes. It was used a lot on routes over the Atlantic and Pacific, but ACARS has largely replaced it these days.If you want to do that sort of thing in FS, your best option is FS Flight Keeper, which comes with an ACARS system which can be installed in your FS aircraft as a panel. This enables you to call up information about the winds at a particular location (either a weather reporting station, or an airport with a weather facility). If it's an airport ICAO code you enter into the ACARS info page, then it will give you details about the airport, such as current wind speed and direction, ILS frequencies, runway lengths, fuel available etc, etc, so you will know what runway is in use amongst other things. You can check out Flight Keeper at the Aerosoft website, and there is a review of it in the Avsim review archive.Al Alan Bradbury Check out my youtube flight sim videos: Here
