DWC ON or OFF for Real World Wx

Featured Replies

I am currently using ASE build 585 (networked) with both FSX and FS9 on a Windows 7 x64 computer and a registered version of FSUIPC ver 4.60a (FSX).My aim is to have realistic real world weather in both FSX and FS9, I'm not interested in fancy graphics or sunsets etc, just the cloud as it should be and wind as it should be. I fly with DWC on in ASE and weather settings off in FSUIPC, I also have automatic downloads and vatsim weather ticked and set to 15 mins. I have read so many posts saying fly with DWC off and use FSUIPC for wx control and others saying turn it on, I'm getting confused as to what state it should be in.The reason I ask this is the wind appears unrealistic while flying VFR between 3000ft and 6000ft. As an example I flew yesterday at 6000' and the wind didn't change from take off 219/7 except a very brief change to 249/31 for a couple of minutes then the nose suddenly yawed and the wind was back to 219/7 and thats how it stayed for 140 miles. When I descended it changed to 260/11 and that was the surface wind at destination. I am very happy with the cloud depiction its quite realistic in my opinion its just the wind I need to get right. This has problem has occured since installing ASE, not just build 585.How do I set up ASE for realistic winds pleaseGlen

Hi Glen,The ground wind to 6,000 foot situation is normal due to our need to have wind smoothing take place and the time needed to do this.Weather will be just as accurate with DWC On as Off. If you are using planes that are sensitive to wind shifts then DWC is Off and you control shifts through FSUIPC. The same if you use an ATC program, DWC Off.I believe that most users should have DWC On.

I concur with Jim's point that the wx generated by ASE will be accurate, whether or not DWC is on or off. In my case, I have DWC "off", for a few reasons. I fly with FSX and I had originally turned DWC off to alleviate the haze/whiteout issue with build 572 (which was subsequently corrected with build 585). Secondly, I'm using the current registered version of FSUIPC which has its own wind smoothing function, which seems to work quite well. And lastly, I just started using Radar Contact and it's been reported that there are some issues when using both RC and ASE that can be corrected if DWC is off. But the important point is that the recently released service packs have corrected any haze issues previously observed.

What I wonder:the tooltip in ASE says, that DWC is needed for "Visibility Graduation and smoothing"...Do I get rapid visibility changes then, when DWC is turned off in FSX?
