DX 9 or DX10, and nHancer?

Featured Replies

I have a question on DX9 and DX10 for FSX in Windows 7.I have upgraded from XP (32) to Win 7 (64), and reinstalled FSX. I don’t know whether I am running FSX under DX9 or DX10, and if that’s selectable how to select it. And is there a reason to go to one or the other (performance, visuals, etc.). My GPU supports either, however DX10 wasn’t an option under DX9 (AFAIK).Then the question on whether or not to use nHancer on my NV video card. Am I correct that nHancer does not support DX10, so it’s useless? I have used it on XP for some years now and used to love its simplicity and unambiguity as far as which settings took preference in the NV CP.Thanks for any answers,Bruce.PS. Sorry if this has been asked and answered before.

Hi Bruce,If your video board is DirectX10 capable, you will see an option within FSX, go to OPTIONS / SETTINGS / DISPLAY, you should now see a checkbox under Global Options called Preview DirectX 10, just check the box. You may have to restart FSX.I'm not sure what video board your using, I stopped using nHancer and started using Nvidia Inspector to make changes to my video board.Personally, I prefer DX9 over DX10 even though I see a slight increase in performance using DX10. The problems I've seen/experienced using DX10 with FSX doesn't justify the slight increase in performance I get using DX10 (IMHO).

Indeed. But I'd like to add that the performance improvement that DX10 gives over DX9 out of the box, can easily be reproduced and even surpassed by using the right tweaks and addons like fps-limiter for DX9. I've used DX10 for a while but after giving DX9 some real attention I was able to get better performance out of it (smooth performance above extremely dense trees, which I just can't get done with DX10). But apart from that all, I also do think the problems don't justify the slight increase out of the box. And ENB, which imho greatly enhances FSX, won't work with DX10: what more reason do you need to skip DX10. :(

Hi Bruce,It gives FSX better reflections, shadows, Screen Space Ambient Occlusion (SSAO) and better High dynamic range rendering (HDR). Here is the download location.http://speedskater.ru/download/arccvid/EMBserie_for_MSFS.rarI use ENB and would not fly without it, it's a great small addon that's easy to install. If you decide to use the program just copy the DLL's and the ini file into FSX's main folder.Once that's done, the only thing left is to tweak the ini file to your liking. Here is my ini file settings, they look great on my system.
