May 4, 200422 yr No worries. It's a pity VFR Terrain wasn't available for the PC Pilot comparison. Maybe they'll cover it next issue.John
May 4, 200422 yr Hi John,Yes, the shopping trip is finished... but sadly, it didn't include a trip to a local FS9 scenery stockist. ;)Thanks for the info, and I'll probably get the existing package anyway, as I also like to cruise around the rest of the virtual UK as often as possible.Cheers,Ivor.
May 4, 200422 yr I had the South East but removed it as I didn't like the merge between VFRPS and non-VFRPS scenery and for the reasons above. However, VFR Terrain will become a fixture on my hard drive for sure I feel, as it will synergise nicely with the landclass and addon scenery I already have. Many, many thanks for your time and trouble. Allcott
May 4, 200422 yr I had Lago's Terramesh and thought it was OK - but just bought VFR Terrain. It's stunning. Coasts are a triumph - with one caveat I'll come back to. I had just embarked on a coastal tour of the UK starting in Cornwall. With only the VFR Photographic scenery, what a mess - villages slopping over cliffs, etc. - all the usual problems. With the new VFR Terrain, everything I've seen so far is precisely aligned. And inland, every wrinkle in the land is there and - with the photo scenery - believe me the landscape springs to life. It really is brilliant, just a shame FS9 can't display its full resolution (compared with 2002, that is - the Terrain is compatible with both). The caveat: for reasons they set out clearly in the (excellent) installation manual, the VFR Terrain team have overwritten things such as estuaries with FS water - so you can land on them; alas, you lose the mudflats and creeks effect, the tide is always in! - which is a shame. There are some other minor issues, e.g. to do with "localised flooding" in low-lying areas. Also its accuracy really highlights the MSFS "flat airfields" policy, causing some jumps in the landscape. And
May 5, 200422 yr HarveyThanks for that. It sums up what I was hoping to achieve with the scenery. Can I just point out that the VFR Terrain team (i.e. myself) have made the installation of the replacement 'real water' textures entirely optional - you don't need to install them. Not only that, but if you do, you can choose to install them as an alternative texture set which can be switched in and out of the system as required.JohnVisual Flighthttp://www.visualflight.co.uk/
May 5, 200422 yr I'm a big fan of the VFR scenery, both the photo sceneries and the new mesh, but I have to say I find the lack of trees a bit offputting when taking off or landing. There are some areas though where people have been adding their own autogen trees, for example here's a screenshot of the free Oxon scenery that's designed to work with the photo textures.http://forums.avsim.net/user_files/74632.jpgHopefully more will gradually appear.Talking specifically about the new mesh, it's by far the best I've seen in the European area and most importantly it has amazing coastal outlines. As a frequent FS2004 coastline hopper in floatplanes and flying boats the difference this makes is absolutely incredible, every single inlet and bay is clearly delineated and cliffs actually look like cliffs. And of course when you're off/around the coast the lack of autogen is much less noticable. Here's a screenie looking down Holy Island towards Anglesey:http://forums.avsim.net/user_files/74635.jpgHave funFinn
May 5, 200422 yr Author I'll defniitely have to check out the VFR Terrain. It should bring the England and Wales scenery to the same level of quality as the Switzerland Pro scenery. -
May 5, 200422 yr doh ... I was obviously in such a rush I missed that one; will take a look. And sorry, I didn't realise such outstanding work could be less than the product of a team, John!
May 6, 200422 yr John,Very interesting, and the terrain looks fantastic. It would be useful to continue the comparison at the bottom of the page in your link with the same view with vanilla FS scenery, then we can see the full range of improvements.ThanksRichard
May 6, 200422 yr RichardYou know it never occurred to me that with all the various terrain mesh sceneries around today anyone would still be using the just the default scenery, but then that's what other commercial producers are using as a baseline for judging their products against, so why not? I've added the vanilla shot at the bottom of the VFR Terrain page, www.visualflight.co.uk/vfrterrain . Thanks for the suggestion.I see the avsim news editors have completely missed mentioning the the accurate coastline in the news item on the front page right now. This is a bit of a shame as this a key feature in my opinion, not to mention a significant first. Anyone here got a hot line to the news desk? :-) John
