Aircraft Parameters and Runway selection...

Featured Replies

Hi,I wanted to ask two things:1. Can the aircraft parameters be changed in RC? Things like rate of descent and things of that sort? Reason I ask is that in my heavy jets it seems like to turn to final can be pretty tight and I often overshoot the beam. It seems I'm vectored to my final turn when I'm already perpendicular to the runway angle. Maybe I just don't make sharp enough turns? :)2. Other question, how does RC select runways, especially for landings? Unlike the FS9 ATC which vectors you to the closest runway, RC seems to vector to the farthest one. Today, from MMMX-KATL I was vectored to rwy 8L which is the northern most runway and my path intercepted other inbounds. For t/o from MMMX, i was directed to 23L, rather than the 23R. None of this is a big deal, just more curiosity as it seems to operate much differently than FS9. thanks much

First make sure you select the proper aircraft type on the General tab of RC. If you see a tight turn coming slow the aircraft. Using flaps first or second step when slowing on base anticipating a tight turn on a short approach is a good technique. On a base intercept RC normally sets you up for a localizer intercept about 12 to 15 nm out. As soon as RC clears you for the intercept you can also start descending if necessary on your intercept leg if permitted by viewing on the approach plate.I have attached as a sample (not for real-world navigation) the 9R approach plate for KATL. RC would eventually probably setup a base intercept that would take you near HARSN intersection and as you get close you can descend to 5000 feet as noted in the vertical profile. If you are coming from the south tio southeast from MMX you might get a downwind pattern to avoid the 90 degree intercept. It varies. Note the MSA for KATL is 3500 in all directions. Exceptions are airports in difficult terrain where approach corridors through valleys are used in which case you might choose to follow your own nav choosing an IAP at approach time. Have your aircraft in the final landing configuration putting the gear down and your final speed and flaps to be stabilized at just past BURNY. RC first selects the runway being used by AI observed at approach time, then weather, navaid availability, and runway length are considered. Once you know the direction recommended by RC choose another runway such as one of the 9's in this case.At this airport you can increase realism if you know how to use an editor such as ADE9X (similar in some respects to AFCAD for FS9 only).8L/26R and 9R/27L are shorter than their paired parallels. If traffic permits the standard for many parallel runway settings with this many runways is to use the shorter runways for landing and the longer runways for take off. This provides room for a heavier load or surface drag and more abort space (a higher take-off V1). In general it takes more runway allowance for take-off then landing. To implement this you need to for each runway make both ends the same in FS closing both ends for take-off or both ends for landing. This does not affect RC4 other than it affects the behavior of FS AI controlled by FS. Which editor you use depends on your FS version. Make backups of any AFCAD or other files, possibly a backup of that entire scenery folder, so you can get back if needed. This is a bit advanced but it might help get your AI ducks in order. It is something to whet your appetite in the future and especially for FSX it is not trivial if you are using a KATL add-on. It also looks like 10/28 is used for cargo aircraft and I'd just close that runway to prevent passenger AI from using it.For take-off RC chooses the closest runway to your gate and in this case your longer take-off runways are on the inboard side to the terminals so that looks good. Your scenery designer perhaps has already taken this into consideration in the airport properties file.
