September 19, 201015 yr Idea : FSX is on disk 2 of 3 (namely 0,1,and 2), of partition letter G:/Temporarily copy all of FSX to another HD say, disk 1Remove disk 2 and replace with a new SSD (first time installed on computer so no other traces of it yet, get it up and goiong letter it G:) using same SATA cables for disk 2, so it is now disk 2, right? Recopy FSX to the SSD which is was made to the partition/drive letter FSX had before G:/ of disk = 2So the registry paths are all correct now, right? And should not FSX work as it did before without a glitch :( ???Any comments?Oh, one more thing, Should not be in the Win 7 OS forum but I got caried away thinking I could have it both ways and have Win 7 installed too. But no way.....to keep FSX in the registry along with all my payware, I have to keep Vista 64 as my OS. Will this bother the performance of the SSD ?Allen
September 19, 201015 yr In past times (before cheap external drives used for backups) I have done exactly the same thing. As long as you give the new SSD the drive letter G: it should work fine. Now you will have performance issues using a SSD with Vista 64 because Vista doesn't support the Trim command. You can read all about Trim here:http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/TRIMTodd

Could I do a similar transplant of Windows to the SSD as well?? renaming the old HD copy to Windows.old just before a reboot? It's also of concern to me that I may want to upgrade my CPU in the near future. I think Vista 64 might support a radical change without having to buy a new license AND most importantly without loosing the registry which I intended to achieve by deleting the MOBO and CPU entries in the Device Manager of Vista before the transplanting of a new CPU, whereas Win-7 will require a new license with such a change of CPU/MOBO and if its already installed would have to be re-installed (not done as an upgrade over Vista). Those are the reasons I wanted to keep Vista 64 for a while while saving up for the new i5 core system and after a stabilised Vista from post-surgery, I would then upgrade to Win-7al
September 19, 201015 yr Yes you can upgrade to Windows 7 first and that will keep all of your settings and programs but make sure everything is working properly before swapping the hard drives. Again along as the SSD is drive G: in the end everything should work regrading FSX.If I'm understanding your second question correctly the answer is no. You can't rename the Windows folder as the OS won't allow it. And even if you could you would never be able to reboot because you would no longer have a folder named "Windows" and that is the folder where the OS has to reside. You would need to do a hard drive image backup first if you want to swap out the drive that the OS is installed on then restore that image to the new drive and then run the Windows repair option to write the master boot record on the new drive.Todd
