VOR Indicator

Note that the radial you follow is not necessarily the magnetic course that you would follow. The VOR radials are set by adjusting the transmitter so that the 000 radial is at local magnetic north at some point in time. Magnetic variation constantly is changing over time, but the aviation authorities don't constantly change the VORs and charts to match. So you fly the VOR radial shown on the chart and your track over the ground should be along the radial, regardless of what the compass and GPS mag course are telling you. I think you will find the same thing if you install the magdec.bgl replacement file for the 2010 epoch. The magnetic course on your compass (assuming no wind/drift) should approximate the "real world", but you still need to select and follow the charted radial. If FAA or other authority has adjusted the VOR, you would need to edit that with the easynavs program from the same web site.According to FAA data, PMM VOR is set using the 1965 magvar epoch at E00, and that is the value used in fs9, whereas the actual magdec from NOAA NGDC calculator is 4 deg 53 min West. For SVM, the FAA data is 1965/W03, which fs9 also agrees with.If all you have is the "magenta line" on the GPS or map from a flightplan (not following a chart), then fly to intercept the magenta line and when you do, adjust the OBS or CRS dial so your indicator is centered, and fly whatever radial that happens to be.scott s..
