September 21, 201015 yr Hey folks,my good ole 256MB nVidia 7900GS is a few years old and starting to produce more and more graphic corruption, not only in 3D but now also even in the O/S. Seems like it doesn't want to serve too much longer. Doesn't seem to run hot though, just above 40°C as far as I can tell. Furthermore FSX runs ok, but not great. Getting WAY more than enough frames when disabling AI, 3D clouds and enhanced Enabling some of these will degrade performance significantly, so it's ok for IFR which I do most but it could be better.Other than that I have an Intel [email protected] GHz, 8GB DDR3 7-7-7-20, whatever that means, 2 HDDs and I believe a 500W PSU. Nothing O/C'ed, nothing really changed in BIOS or so. I don't wanna spend a lot of $ though. Just saw a XFX HD5750 or a 5770, both 1GB, that seem priced alright. Since I have really no idea about current hardware anymore I wonder if someone could suggest something also based on the other system specs. I have to say I am an nVidia fan otherwise... and also, it wouldn't need to run other "games" besides FSX.Thanks!
September 21, 201015 yr FSX tends to favour nvidia cards. Gtx460 is supposed to be good bang for bucks. Prices are reasonable I think. They come factory overclocked, Palit platinum is some of the highest oc you can get. And a few are on a shorter board that fit more easily into the case. If you Google reviews you'll know more. "I´ll rather be down here wishing I was up there than be up there wishing I was down here"
September 22, 201015 yr Author Thanks for the hint, I will check a few reviews and prices asap. Funny that you bring that point up because I forgot to mention, but indeed my case is quite short and I had some serious trouble fitting the old 7900GS in there, length-wise. Had to bend that metal bar a bit, uh... Seems it didn't do bad though.
