Installing the Windows 822603 patch - help!

Featured Replies

I have downloaded the above patch which has a self executing icon. When clicking on this and progressing through the instructions it tells me that the set up is finished, but then does not progress to install the patch. When checking in "add/remove programmes" window, it is not to be found.Looking once again at the Knowledge Base article, it says to install this, you must log on as an administator and use the appropriate set up switches. This all sounds kinda heavy stuff to this poor idoit. Am I missing something? This is for use with the Windows XP/Home O/SThanks for any enlightenment given.

Do you have XP's Service Pack 1 installed? I believe that must be done first. 822603 downloaded and then installed itself automatically for me. R-

Hi RonYes I have had the SP1 Service Pack installed since it first becme available. Thanks

If you right click on the file, you should see a menu option called "run as". Select this, then set it to use your administrator account. You will need to enter the password you set for the administrator when you installed the OS.http://saltydogfly2.avsim.net/images/avsim_sig.jpg"Ah, the Luftwaffe - the Washington Generals of the History Channel." - Homer Simpson

Hi KenMany thanks for the reply. I did as you suggested, but it won't recognise my password for some reason. Is there a way to overcome this?I only ever use one of two passwords that I have, but it rejects them both.Thank you

Have you tried Administrator with nothing in the password field?

Hi Yes, it merely points out that the password field is empty. Is there a way of reviewing your password, or getting a new one?Thankyou

If you can't remember your administrator password, you are going to be in some trouble.I assume your current account is a limited account. That means you do not have the security rights to change the administrator password.Unless you download some hacking tools, the only way around this is to re-install the OS. When you install, you are give the opportunity to set the administrator password.I am not too familiar with WinXP Home, so I could be off base here. I use WinXP Pro.http://saltydogfly2.avsim.net/images/avsim_sig.jpg"Ah, the Luftwaffe - the Washington Generals of the History Channel." - Homer Simpson

Biggles - The password information is encrypted into the Registry and is not recoverable without either a password recovery diskette or a copy of the "good" Registry. This link points to some really useful general information regarding WindowsXP/NT password procedures: http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/win_xp_passwords.htm . And this link will get you to a utility that MAY allow for a manual password reset: http://home.eunet.no/~pnordahl/ntpasswd/ .Doug

Hi DougMany thanks for all the info. I'll give it a go. Cheers

From what I've read, this patch addresses some issues with USB functionality in Windows XP with SP1 update.Do you have SP1 installed? Are you having troubles or problems with USB peripherals like your mouse, for example? If you're not having problems, why install this latest update?

If you are using WinXP Home, start your computer and Window in Safe Mode. Start computer, when the black DOS screen appears, start tapping your F8 key. If you are lucky, a dos screen will appear giving you choices. Select safe mode, it will load to the administrator account, hopefully not asking for a password.Once in safe mode, select control panel, user accounts, select your User account, and make yourselft an administrator. This should alleviate the need for doing this in the future, since your User account now has administrator privileges.Retry installing the updates from your user account.W. Sieffert
