USB Patch for XP SP1 - Not a Fluffy Fix

Featured Replies

This may be a dumb thing to ask, but has anyone else seen a performance boost with this fix even though they are not using any USB peripherals. In other words, does the USB controller just being active play a role?I have a later version of winXP with SP1 already included and I installed this fix. I have no USB peripherals attached and got the feeling that I nudged up the scale a handful of frames. I didn't thoroughly benchmark before and after, but looks like 2 to 5 fps increase.Joe

Another more general question while we're talking about improved performance especially with locked frame rates - what is actually the point in locking your frame rate to a certain value? I've always run FS2002 and now FS9 without any such lock, and when I noticed my frame rate to top out close to or even above 60 (for example, when in external view and panning below the aircraft) I never saw any point in locking to, say, 30 fps or so.Sorry if this should be a dumb question, but you got me curious :-) .

Um, how do you lock in a frame rate at 30?Goto Display, Settings, Hardware and in the top left will be a slider, yours will show locked at twenty, nmove it tio 30 or all the way right for unlimited

Hi:Well, there you are. Amazing what I don't know about this MS FS stuff. And I've been flight simming since I flew with FS on my Commodore 64, too. Although I think that one was done by Bruce Artwick.Anyhow, your "Go to Display, Settings, Hardware etc" tip worked like a charm. I am now getting smooth flying at 30fps whereas I was getting smooth flying at 20fps. I could probably set it higher, but I don't think I will. I am happy at 30fpsIf it weren't for the flickering of the autogen business, I would consider myself to have one beautifully working flight simulator. I understand the flickering autogen is on my 128MB ATI Radeon 9800G PRO's doorstep. I'll wait and see what the next version of drivers from ATI will do.Thanks again, I appreciate the fact that you took the time to answer my cry.DonaldS

The variables between indiviudal PC set up's is so scattered, what works for one won't necessarily work for another. My performance was awful, on the average of 12FPS, but then again, my system is lowly. Just a 1.4 Athlon, 512 MB using a ATI 9000 PRO 64MB.Having been at least 6 months since I reformated, I decided it was time. Backed up all my FS9 files and started fresh with a clean slate.Loaded the backups, and WHOAAAAA! Had the FPS locked at 20 and there it sat. Locked it at 30 and there it sat. Out of curiosity, I set it to "unlimited" and was seeing frames in the 50-60 field. This is with all sliders set at 3/4, but not maxed. MUCH more fluid and fewer stutters. Decided to try D/Ling XP SP1. Awful. Back to 12FPS. Added the USB update. No change. Removed the SP1. Back to 30 FPS where it is currently locked. What is the "holy grail" in this never ending quest for performance.I doubt we will ever completely know.
