October 7, 200322 yr Hey everyone.Sorry, I wasn't sure where else to ask this question. I'm trying to get onto a number of different search engines, such as Google, AltaVista, Yahoo, etc. and they will not work! For all except Google, I get to the search page, type in what I'm looking for, and get the old "This Page Cannot Be Displayed". On google, it's even worse...I can't even get to the search page. Instead, I get a "CPanel.net" page within the google address. Here's a picture of what I mean:http://forums.avsim.net/user_files/41454.jpgIt's really wierd because it's only like this in my file. I'm using Windows XP Home, and if I try to do searches in anyone else's file, there are no problems. Anyone have any ideas? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!
October 7, 200322 yr Maybe you have some rogue adware or spyware installed.http://www.lavasoftusa.com/software/adaware/Try a scan with Lavasoft's Adaware and see if it finds anything. It'll root out anything dodgy, such as spyware and will also root out any unwanted cookies. It's a free download for the standard edition. Also, try emptying you temporary internet files folder.Other than that, I can't think of any more suggestions.
October 7, 200322 yr Who and what is cPanel? Did you accept the installation of some online software in a pop-up? Emergency Pant's recommendation is a good one. Here's another that's recommended by Maximum PC, even over Lavasoft's...Spybot Search and Destroy - http://www.safer-networking.org/ - FreewareJim
October 7, 200322 yr Hey guys, thanks! Not really sure how it got on here, I didn't accept any downloads except stuff of Avsim. I only use this computer for FS, and all I have is basically freeware plus some PSS stuff. I'll give those a try. Thanks a lot!
October 7, 200322 yr You have what I had -- it looks like a Trojan Qhosts virus. Go to the Symantec website and download FixQhost.exe. This one's a fairly new pest and your symptoms are exactly what I had.Good luckCS
October 7, 200322 yr Alright well I tried all that, did a complete virus scan, and absolutely no help. Any other ideas?
October 7, 200322 yr Do a Tracert and see where it's going. That will tell you if you are being redirected on your client somehow.Jim
October 7, 200322 yr Commercial Member My son had something very similar happen recently. Here's how we fixed it (this is taken from a newsgroup, but it's the exact procedure we followed):1. Get and run SpyBot Search and Destroy2. If you're still having the problem, Start->Run ('notepad')For WinNT, Win2000, WinXP: open the file C:WINNTSystem32driversetclmhosts (you'll need to set the open window to look for 'all files' and note that it's NOT 'lmhosts.sam', just 'lmhosts'.For Win95, Win98, WinME, same thing except the file is C:WindowslmhostsSomewhere in that file there'll be a line that looks like this: '123.45.67.89 www.google.com', (or whatever site you're having trouble viewing) if not, check for a file 'hosts' in the same directory that may also have that line.Remove that line and save the file.If at that point it's still broken, or it's still broken and there's no entry in lmhosts or hosts, you should probably contact your local IT professional. (almost sounded like a real PSA for a second, didn't it?)good luck! October 7, 200322 yr Agreed !!!Even though Adaware is a brilliant tool (and for free), Spybot actually removes the nasty stuff Adaware does not seem to recognise.Spybot is even more user friendly ... and ... also for free !!!SergeDublin
October 7, 200322 yr Ok I've tried both SpyBot and Adware, and they don't pick up anything. I've tried diond a full virus scan, nothing wrong there. I went looking for lmhosts, but all i could find was lmhosts.sam. I did an entire search for all files containing "Google" and found a folder under windows called C:/Windows/srchasst. Inside, under a few different folders, it has an xml file with all the different search engines listed and a lot of stuff I don't really understand. Could this maybe be the problem? Also, how can I do a Tracert as recommended above? Thanks!
October 8, 200322 yr To do a tracert, just go to a command line and do this:tacert www.google.comYou will see the IP address of each machine along the route. If you then do a "ping " from the command line, it will give you the fully qualified name.Jim
October 8, 200322 yr By command line, do you mean the address bar in Internet Explorer? Sorry if that sounds dumb...I'm not used to this sort of thing. Thanks!
October 8, 200322 yr By command line, I mean from a real command line. Start / Run / enter "CMD" and hit Enter.Jim
