October 11, 200322 yr >I didn't run anyone down, I didn't refer to anyone or>anything by name. >>Blocking threads would be a great form of censorship for sure,>allowing a moderator to style collective public opinion and>ideas as he or she sees fit.>>But this isn't what these forums are about, at least not for>most of us!I'm sorry to have to say this, but you are a liar, and now a back-peddling liar that won't stand his ground when challenged. I believe the word I'm looking for is "coward". There is clear and unequivocal inference in your first post to FSUIPC, and not saying it by name doesn't make what you did right or proper. And you're still plain wrong, wrong, wrong. And still no apology! Lies, cowardice - and blind stupidity. You really started well in this forum.Sometimes the moderator needs to act when the poster won't act in a decent and honourable manner. I think this is one of those times. This `new` product is being tarnished by the attitudes of a few. The developers desparately need to crawl out from whatever woodwork they've secreted themselves behind and publically disassociate themselves from this kind of spin-doctoring, rumour-mongering and b!tchfighting. If its freeware, release it and let the cards fall where they will. The kind of promotion that is going on here reminds me so much of a commercial PR campaign designed to make lacklustre products look good in relation to another by pushing attention away from the detriments of that product by highlighting the supposed deficiencies in the opposition that it's hardly surprising many are now suspicious of the motives and the means of the developers. That may not be their fault, but it's their product that will suffer. I for one won't be going near it with a barge pole.Allcott
October 11, 200322 yr >Making stuff for FS2k2 or FS2k4 is not work. Anybody that considers >it work should quit doing it. If you can't do it for the pure >pleasure of self satisfaction and furthering the hobby, just quit. That's just total baloney !.Doing add-ons for FS is *WORK*, because its not easy, and it's getting more and more difficult and time consuming to do.Its enjoyable work, but still its 'work'. And at some point a freeware developer does have to make the decision either quit or go payware. It does get to the point where it does become 'too much' work to continue to do without some sort of compensation. And when people just quit, its everyone's loss, cause some really talented people have left this hobby for good.Regards.Ernie.
October 11, 200322 yr Ok guys, I'll jump in at this point....Lets keep this on track. I dont really want to lock or even delete this post as there are comments within it that are valid. But I will not let it continue if it gets too heated and turns sour. There is a place in the world of flightsim for both commercial and freeware authors. Each has the right to decide which avenue they wish to take. If they want to charge... fine, if they want to do it free... fine. At the end of the day its YOU who makes the decision. YOU choose if you want to download a freeware file or download a payware file.Aidihttp://www.vfr-flightcenter.com/avsim_sig.jpg
October 11, 200322 yr You should lock it because it has turned into a political, religious tinkling contest. Same as PC vs MAC, liberal vs conservative, religious vs atheists, Fly! Vs MSFS and last but not least payware vs freeware. We of the flight simulator community are incapable of rationally discussing our hobby without fighting. People dream of world peace but within this close nit community we are incapable of getting along. How in the world can we ever expect different cultures to live in peace. Of course the best fight ever was about whether or not it
October 11, 200322 yr Hi all.I agree with Ernie... addon development for the FS series is work. And it is getting more difficult. And we do all make choices about how we spend our time between hobby and earning a living.I don't think anyone would truly want John, Ernie, Peter or myself to stop all Addon development because it is work. If you passionately persue a hobby, work would be expected. It's the difference between listening to music, and making it.If ActiveSky or FSMeteo use FSUIPC3+ for FS2004, then the end user still can download FSUIPC and register the programs, as per their instructions with FSUIPC. Then the use of FSUIPC, for those programs, is still free for the enduser. The added content of FSUIPC, beyond the IPC function would still require buying FSUIPC. Confused? I'm not surprised, but that is because Peter insisted on having the added content and the IPC as one DLL module. Had he not done that, I suspect his sales of FSUIPC would have been much smaller, as lots of people would have used just the free IPC... including the payware community. Peter isn't out to cheat anyone... he's just decided on a course of action that will get him paid for commercial programs using his module, and for endusers that want his added content. I also agree with John... I have no beef with FSUIPC, or Peter Dowson. I do not like the registration process for a freeware utility that only uses the IPC function of FSUIPC. But that was Dowson's choice, and we either need to live with it, or use FSConnect ( or now FDS Connection ).Dick
October 11, 200322 yr Hi all.FDS Connect has a forum devoted to their new module:http://www.flightdecksoftware.com/forum/in...78c6e001e0940c2Both developers and endusers can glean information there. From an enduser standpoint, there isn't much to learn. FDS Connect is a small module you add to the modules folder. Programs that use FSUIPC will not use FDS Connect as a replacement ( or FSConnect, by Russ Dirks ).If you want a commercial program to use FDS Connect, then you'll need to email them, to urge them to use it... that is if the copyright owners of FDS Connect allow a commercial package to use their module at all.============I queried that forum, to see if I could include a copy of FDS Connect inside a freeware package. I got a response ( in seconds ) from Bart Devriendt, stating that was acceptable! They will have instructions for an accompanying copyright text file, to include with the module, next week.Dick
October 11, 200322 yr Yes, thank you!You can see the obvious tactics of 'Alcott'. If people like him wish to impose their views on everyone and suppress another person's opinion altogether, they simply start a hostile thread response, hoping to stir up enough dissent to get an entire thread shut down. Thank you AVSIM moderator for seeing through this and allowing valid discussions to take place without giving in to this juvenile behavior.
