November 12, 201015 yr Hi,I currently have a Q6600 overclocked to 3.37GHz. Would there be a noticable performance increase in FSX if I upgrade to an i7 and overclock it to 4GHz?Thank you in advance
November 12, 201015 yr Moderator Yes there will. But be aware, you can not just upgrade the CPU. The Q6600 and the I7 are two completely different beasts, different socket, different memory - you're talking about a complete upgrade - mobo, memory, CPU etc.But there is a definite improvement on a properly set up system.Vic RIG#1 - I9 14900K MSI Pro z790 RTX 5070Ti 40" 4K Monitor 3840x2160
November 12, 201015 yr Thanks for the reply.Oh yeah, I'm aware of that. FSX is one of the reasons I'd upgrade, so I wanted to make sure an upgrade would make a difference. Today I've ordered the i7 950 and 6GB of Mushkin Ridgeback memory. Just trying to decide which motherboard to get... It's a tie between the Asus P6X58D-E, Asus Sabertooth, and the Gigabyte GA-X58A-UD3R. Really not sure which one to pick, as they each have something going for them.
November 12, 201015 yr Moderator I have the P6X58D with my 980X and it's a super mobo. I'd go with that one.One of my old systems was a q6600 @ 3.66 - went to a q9650 at 3.88 and it was a significant difference - then to an I7 980x and a bigger difference yet.Good luck!Vic RIG#1 - I9 14900K MSI Pro z790 RTX 5070Ti 40" 4K Monitor 3840x2160
November 15, 201015 yr Hi Vic,I'm looking for an upgrade from my Q6600, and will most likely eventually go to an I7 CPU, or might even skip that generation and go for next wonder from Intel, and who knows what Flight might demand in the hardware area.I see that you upgraded from a Q6600 to a Q9650, both socket 775 devices. Did you use the same mobo to do this, and how successful was that?I have just upgraded my BIOS on my Gigabyte X38T-DQ6 machine to F6, and will probably go for the F7G that this CPU requires, but as it's about the end of the line for the socket 775 boards, I'm wondering just how well it works. Thanks, Bruce. November 15, 201015 yr Moderator Hi Bruce - yes, I was using an Nvidia 680i from EVGA and the 9650 just dropped in and clocked up very well. Wasn't as easy as the I7 clocking but it worked.Vic RIG#1 - I9 14900K MSI Pro z790 RTX 5070Ti 40" 4K Monitor 3840x2160
