Changing Approach

Featured Replies

Hi Everyone.Unsure whether I am making the correct selection in requesting a change in the rwy approach given by ATC.Example. Winds 320@15 ATC reports the approach will be ILS 15.Knowing there is a Rwy 33 back course I select this approach and appears that it will be the approach.Prior to landing ATC gives me the Back course 33 approach, but adds circle for rwy 15.I remain with my initial request and land on rwy 33 and I am told by ATC that I landed on wrong rwy and to clear the rwy.Am I doing something wrong.Any help appreciated.Kenny G.P.S. I am referring to FS2004.

Hi Kenny, you'll have to make separate requests for a different approach and runway. However, the only alternative runways available for selection are the ones ones in the same direction as your original assigned runway. For example, if you're cleared for approach to RW15R, you may request 15L, but not 33R or 33L.As far as MSFS ATC goes, you're in a no-win situation :). In FS2002, ATC would change the runway on you at the very last minute, if the winds were unfavourable, while in FS9 it sticks to the runway you were originally assigned, regardless of winds...Cheers,Gosta.http://hifi.avsim.net/activesky/images/wxrebeta.jpg

I think there is an error in the way runway switching is handled. On several occassions I will be assigned 9R but request 9L due to AI traffic, and approach clears me to 9L with a circle to land 9R. No idea why. Anyway when I get handed off to TWR, TWR clears me for 9R, the original runway, not the 9L requested and approved by APP. I continue and land 9L but no yelling from TWR ??This has happened everytime I have switched to another runway at various large airports, and even with the same landing direction.I am going to see if the request should be made to TWR instead of CTR or APP and see what happens. I know side steps are common and this maybe better.Bill

Gosta,I tried it again today going into Miami. RWY 30 was active and was the assigned RWY. From the ATC menu I selected another approach. A new menu opened with available runways. I selected ILS 27L and asked for same from Approach. Approach gave me ILS vectors rwy 27 with circle to land rwy 30. After the intercept I switched to TWR and TWR cleared me for RWY 30? Nothing about 27L or no menu item to request 27L. Other than the "select approach" menu item there isnt another item for the RWY other than the one that opens as I mentioned above, which I do select. If I am doing something wrong please let me know. It has happened so often I really think there is an ATC problem.ThanksBill

Hi Bill, that's because at Miami, there isn't another runway in the same direction as RW 30, i.e. no 30L or 30R. FS only activates multiple runways, if they're actually parallel or VERY close to parallel.Try flying into KDFW or KLAX. You will have an alternative to cchoose from, whatever the weather.Cheers,Gosta.http://hifi.avsim.net/activesky/images/wxrebeta.jpg

Well I think I will stop beating this to death after this :-)Did a flight KSFO to KLAX to try out your suggestion. I get RWY 6R from approach and then requested 6L. A specific menu item did show up asking for the Runway as different from approach. So I figure I am on the right track. So I request 6L from the controller and get cleared for ILS 6L with a side step to 6R. No problems so far. Now I go to TWR on final and would you believe TWR says "Fly straight in 6R" :-(I dont understand whats going wrong and I think this horse is about to die...Thanks Bill
