More than 60fps with Vsync....problem or not?

Featured Replies

Hi guys,Just completed a vanilla install of FSX and Win7 64 the other day and trying to tune my system according to NickN's guides. I am well aware of Bojotes tweaks but am trying to get to a stable state before I start implementing them.Anyway, I have Nvidia Inspector setup according to Nicks guide with VSynce forced on (no Vsync line in the cfg) and although it seems to be working (no tearing of the picture), I still get very unstable frame rates when I move to unlimited FPS ie. they exceed 60fps in some situations. This only occurs for short periods of time (ie less than a second) but should I be concerned that Vsync is not keeping my frame rates below 60fps as I thought that a by product of its use?On a similar note, I have read many people here using the external frame limiter rather than the FSX one. Although Nick seems not to advocate it's use nowadays many people here seem to be using it with good results. Is there only one of these "programs" or are there a few that do the same thing? Can anyone please point me toward the recommended external farme rate limiter and give some guidance as to it's use?I should add I run a i7 860 (currently unclocked but will run it up to 4-4.2 when FSX is tuned) a GTX260, Vrap for FSX and 4GB 6-7-6-24 1600Mhz RAMMany thanks!

I have a similar PC system and couldn't get stable frame rates with the limiter program either. Until I turned Vsync off. Then the limiter proram would very effectively limit the frame rate to whatevery I had it set for (30 fps) with a very small fluctuation.Hope this helps.Danny

StranexVSync does NOT Limit your FPS as such, it merely synchronises frame rate with the refresh rate. Basically vSync solves 'tearing' by using a double buffer system 'synchronised' to the refresh rate. It doesn't really matter if the frame rate is higher than the refresh rate (as you say it is only transitory), trouble with vSync usually only occurs when the frame rate drops below the refresh rate, although triple buffering can help! :( (http://hardforum.com/showthread.php?t=928593) RegardsPeterH

Thanks guys, Peter has confirmed my suspicions that Vsync doesn't actually limit the fps to the refresh rate but merely attempts to sync them.On the subject of frame limiters, they seem to be hot and miss depending on peoples hardware/setup. Can anyone tell me if there's only one such utility or if there's one that's particularly recommended for fsx? And if I install such a program and it doesn't work, is it easy enough to uninstall? Many thanks!

StranexFPS_Limiter works fine and as it is an app - I believe that if you don't start FSX via FPS_Limiter then it does nothing.Download from the link below: http://rapidshare.com/files/160642187/FPS_Limiter_0.2.rar.I did read that the default frames limiter in FSX can use up to 5% of system reources (unless set to unlimited) and FPS_Limiter uses almost none, but I can't verify that! :( RegardsPeterH

Ok Cheers Peter, I guess the only thing to do is try it out and see what effect (if any) it has.I'm guessing there must be some drawbacks to using it though seeing as Nick no longer recommends its use and there's not many replies on here stating that people use it. I'll report back when I've tried it with my findings!
