Overhead panel keyboard input?

Featured Replies

Is their a keyboard entry to show the overhead panel in FSX with the virtual cockpit. I have Track IR and when I have the view zoomed in close enough, to see the instruments the way I like, it's hit or miss to look up and see the overhead panel. I'm bobbing my head around to have the panel come into view.

This would depend on the model you are using. Some have a 2D popup panel, others don't. Try the Shift-1 to Shift-9 commands or look under the "views" menu from FSX to see a short description of every additional panel of that specific model. The manuals of the aircraft or their kneeboard (Shift-F10) shortcuts will help you too. As said, this stuff is very model dependent, so there's no general yes or no for your request. If it doesn't have a popup, you can define extra views in FSX (via the aircraft.cfg, takes a bit of practice though) or you can use EZCA, a payware tool which can set up views and effects of all kind. I'd recommend this tool if you use TrackIR, but it doesn't come for free so read some reviews first or watch some videos on youtube to see what it can and can't do.So, what's your aircraft you are asking about?

I'm using the EJets V2 EMB175Shift 1-9 commands bring up several different views, but not the overhead. I'll look through the manual some more.

You should be able to create a macro in FSUIPC and then assign a keyboard or joystick shortcut to it.But a much nicer solution is to use EZCA. In my opinition it's a must have, especially with TrackIR.You can set it up so when you loook at the overhead panel for example, it will "know" that this is what you want and it will zoom in and lock the view in position so you can easily read the panel and turn knobs etc, even with TrackIR. It's really simple to setup and has many other nice features as well.

Since I now know what aircraft you are using, I can only say: use Shift-2 or the menu which was mentioned before, because this one has a key combo assigned to the overhead panel. :(Shift-2 gives you this.81569347.th.jpgWhile the menu to access this looks like this.12113475.th.jpgI hope you don't see any offense in my wondering what the problem was here.

Left out the "2", huh? :(

Thanks for the info, but it's not working. When in the Virtual Cockpit and I go through the menu - View>New View>Cockpit>Overhead View - It doesn't bring up the overhead panel, it brings up something, but it's not anything I recognize. Maybe it's a small portion of the panel, I don't know. When I press shift 2 it causes some type of error, the mouse pointer goes from an arrow to the hourglass flashing fast. The sim functions fine, and the mouse pointer still works. Shift 1 through 9 brings up something on every key, except shift 2.I have Level D 767, and when going through the menu commands, it brings up the overhead panel fine. Shift 2 doesn't bring anything up though.

Well, on the Feelthere planes (you've mentioned EJets V2 EMB175), this Shift-2 should work. Otherwise, something on your installation might be wrong. Maybe a reinstall (of the plane) helps you there. Always install your stuff as admin and maybe temporarily disable all antivirus solutions to allow the installer to work unrestricted. If there is a special Feelthere Ejets problem on your system (it looks like one, reading about that panel not showing up), I suggest using the Feelthere forums for support. As said before, these panel shortcuts are model specific, so if yo use another plane (like the mentioned Level D), the access to a maybe present overhead popup is completely different.Shift-2 just opens the second panel (if there is one) of a plane and what this panel will be, depends on the setup of that plane. This is a default FSX keyboard command, nothing more, nothing less. So don't mix things up here, concluding that Shift-2 always will be the overhead panel.I must apologize, because the screenshot above shows the bulky way to access the popups via the FSX menu, here's the better and shorter way, although Shift-2 is my preferable method. So the route is Views>Instrument Panel>Overhead (second entry means Shift-2 then)viewz.th.jpg(don't mind the last two entries with VoxATC, I've added them, they don't come with the original Feelthere installation)By the way, how about a screenshot of this thing popping up when you e. g. go Views>Instrument Panel>>Overhead or Shift-2? This would help judging about the actual problem I think. The E-Jets V2 received their SP1 lately, maybe that's an option for you if not already installed.

I might try a reinstall of the aircraft. I did install as Admin, anti virus off, recent download with service pack.I'm able to get the overhead panel to show up when I go - View Mode>Cockpit>Overhead Panel -- But the view looks like I'm on the floor, out of position somewhat, with the panel too far away to read the names associated with the switches. The glitch when I press shift 2, is just the mouse pointer quickly flashing between a pointer arrow and an hourglass. It does that sometimes with other aircraft if I select certain views through the menus. Sometimes when that happens it coincides with a prompt about the ATI 5870 (running a 3 monitor setup). Forget what it says. I'm running an older driver and hesitate to update when things are working well for the most part. Read on the ATI forums 6 months ago, guys having to go back to older drivers to work well. What is the ideal position for the TrackIR? I have it sitting on top of the monitor about level with my forehead. Wondering if it was mounted higher, it might give a better motion when I look up. Right now, when I have the view moved closer to the instrument panel and look up, the TrackIR comes to a stop with only half the panel showing. I have to zoom out the view, then look up and the panel shows fine.

Sure, the multi monitor setup is able to interfere with some popups there. I'm running a single monitor here, so I don't have a current experience with the Feelthere planes on more than one device, sorry. The TrackIR solution sounds good and that's what it's for, to access the overhead in the VC by just moving your head. The TrackIR device on the monitor should work fine. You can fine tune the position (meaning the viewing angles) when going to the "camera view" in the TrackIR soft. Adjust the angle of the head device (the active headset attachment or the passive cap) and the TrackIR device on your monitor to ensure a green signal (three points) even when looking upwards. This could take some attempts as too much "up" causes a lesser degree of looking down (which will also be needed if you want to access the pedestal functions), so try and fly. :(

I seem to have missed your mouse pointer flashing description... so here is the real answer. The flashing hour glass happens when FSX fails to open a window (e.g. a 2d panel) because it doesn't fit your resolution. This commonly happens when using very high resolutions like eyefinity/triplehead2go where FSX does some insane window size scaling. So it tries to open the window in an infinite loop, causing mouse pointer flashing and an FPS decrease. The fix is simple, just edit the aircraft's panel.cfg and decrease the size of the failing window.

Thanks, I'll give that a try
