Painting Help

Featured Replies

So, I'm playing around with a paint, but my inexperience is showing. I am working in Photoshop and have the dds plugin and the legacy tools installed. I do a save as, select dds, no mipmaps, and use the DXT5 ARGB 8bpp interpolated alpha for the type. When I load it up in FSX it shows up as black textures. Opening it up in DXTbmp shows the texture just fine. What am I missing? Thanks in advance.

Could you elaborate on what you mean when you say paint? Is this a repaint for a FSX aircraft, a texture for a scenery object or somethings else entirely?Regards, Mike Mann

Sorry, yes this is for an FSX aircraft.

This is the workflow I use for doing repaints. First make sure that Photoshop is setup as editor in DXTBmp Prefs/Select Editor menu item then:1. Drag the texture file I want to paint onto the DXTBmp Desktop Icon.2. Click the "Send to Editor" button in DXTBmp.3. Make any changes I want in Photoshop then press CTRL+S to save the changes.4. Returning to DXTBmp I then click the "Refresh after Edit" button.5. Now I use the File/Save menu item (note that DXTBmp doesn't support CTRL+S.6. Done!!Note that I always create a new texture folder in the FSX aircraft I am repainting and place copies of the pertinent files in it.Regards, Mike Mann

Sounds fine if your source is another dds or bmp file, but what about sourcing from a psd file as most paint kits come? I should be able to simply save as from Photoshop should I not? It's how I used to paint for FS9 aircraft, but I seem to be missing something for FSX.

To keep my instructions short I left out some steps. For instance:2. Click the "Send to Editor" button in DXTBmp.At this point I already have Photoshop up and running with my template for the particular plane I am working on. When I send the file to it from DXTBmp I now have two files in Photoshop, the template and the DXTBmp sent original. On the template file in Photoshop I make sure only the relevant layers are visible and then perform a collapse visible on the file (after flipping the image vertically if required). I then Press CTRL+A to select all and then CTRL+C to copy. I then switch to the DXTBmp sent file and press CTRL+V to paste, which creates a new layer. I then perform a collapse visible on the file and then go to step 3 which is:3. Make any changes I want in Photoshop then press CTRL+S to save the changes.Perform the rest of the steps and voila!Regards, Mike Mann
