Effect of wind exaggerated

Featured Replies

Let me say at the start I'm using FS9 and ASE Build 638.I was flying the PMDG 737 into Gatwick and there was a 15 to 20kt wind at about 45 degrees to my port nose. This wind took me off the runway line and I found it impossible to get back on the runway until too late, when I had to go around.Although I'm not a RL pilot I have difficulty in believing that an a/craft as large as a 737 could be held off a runway by a wind of this speed. I don't know if the effect is created by the FS engine or ASE but something is being exaggerated IMO.Iain Smith

Hi,Please use B642. It also could have been wake turbulence. Please fly a few more flights and see what happens.

OK Jim, I'll install 642 and do some flights. Thanks for your rapid response.Iain Smith

Hi,I have B 642 installed and I too have serious doubts about the intensity of the wind effects. I was practicing touch and gos with a DC3 in a moderate wind 12 kt G 18 kt when I was suddenly flipped over just after rotation. It was not the result of wake turbulence. Before that I had been under autopilot when suddenly the aircraft dived while turning right . I have the smooth cloud transition option, no FSUIPC wind related otion selected and turbulence scale at 0.5 in the fs cfg file. See my wind settings in the attached screenshot. Help appreciated. Thank you.

Hi,What makes you say that this couldn't be WT? The only way to know for sure is to disable all AI traffic in FSX.Were these at the same point, at the same airport?

Hi,Thank you for replying. I said it was not caused by wake turbulence because I was not using the active runway (there was less crosswind on the runway I was using) and there was no other traffic. At this point, I am not sure where the problem is but before investigating, I wanted to know if my settings are correct. The autopilot incident was in northern Pensylvania while the airport incident was at Pittsburgh. On one occasion I was unable to align with the runway and lost control even when applying full aileron deflection. Strange. I will report back if I have other pieces of information regarding those wind effects. Thank you.

Hi,Yes, your settings are fine! And, yes please let us know if this continues to happen.

Hi,I wish for you to try in another plane. Also I checked the data from ASE to here:http://weather.uwyo.edu/upperair/sounding.htmland things match up, so it is not an ASE data issue. Those are some pretty good winds though even at low altitude.

Hi,You may be right when saying that ASE is not the culprit but the matter of fact is that I've never experienced this isssue with this DC3C for years while using either , AS6 or REX. :( We'll see if Ian and I are the only ones to have this wind effect problem. In the meantime, I will not use ASE in windy conditions with my DC3C . Too bad.
