February 7, 201115 yr Hi all.I have searched everywhere for an answer to this, and I am stumped. I have tried many times, in many ways, to edit the river textures (FS9) with DXTBmp and Photoshop. But no matter how careful I am in editing; and no matter what format I save the file in - it always shows up in the sim with wide black edges.I know there is no alpha channel in these, it has something to do with using the 0,0,0 black for transparency; but I'm missing something.Anyone have any tips or advise?? Thanks.Ron
February 7, 201115 yr Haven't tried to do this, but looking at various ones with fs9 imagetool it does appear there is an alpha channel which makes sense.scott s..
February 7, 201115 yr Really? Interesting. DXTBmp doesn't show an alpha. Maybe it doesn't like this format or something.I'll try an edit, and add an alpha channel and see what happens. February 8, 201115 yr When I need to troubleshoot texture issues I like to look in both DXTbmp and the imagetool in the sdk for that particular FS version (I don't know how imagetool changes, but the file dates are different in the various sdks).scott s..
February 9, 201115 yr Thanks Scott, but I've tried Imagetool, DXTbmp, BMP2000, various alpha configurations - all to no avail. Most of the time, it shows up in the sim as having a large black border around the river. One time, it actually locked up the sim while loading. I guess I'm stuck trying various substitute textures put out by others until I find better information. When I need to troubleshoot texture issues I like to look in both DXTbmp and the imagetool in the sdk for that particular FS version (I don't know how imagetool changes, but the file dates are different in the various sdks).scott s..
February 9, 201115 yr Hello Ron,Are these the river textures you want to modify? They do, in fact, have transparency:These are old 8-bit textures that may not display correctly in more recent editors like DXTBmp. However, the ACES Image Tool will show the alpha channel correctly. You mention having tried BMP2000 - either that or BMPExt, both by Martin Wright, will display and modify the alpha channel for these files.Best regards.Luis Hot, humid Caribbean paradise!
February 9, 201115 yr Hi, Luis.Obviously I am not doing doing something correctly. I'll have another go, and see what happens. THANKS for the illustrations and tips!RonHello Ron,Are these the river textures you want to modify?
February 9, 201115 yr Is there any reason these textures can't be replaced by new ones using DXT3 for FS9 (or at least DXT1 with alpha)?scott s..
February 9, 201115 yr There must be, because I tried that also, and it didn't work. Of course, that may also be pure operator error!! :( Is there any reason these textures can't be replaced by new ones using DXT3 for FS9 (or at least DXT1 with alpha)?scott s..
February 11, 201115 yr For anyone interested in this texture business, either I am really stupid; or this is more complicated than it appears.I have now managed to edit the rivers texture, and have it retain it's transparency - so I have no wide black borders showing. The new problem is that the color palette seems to be changing. (I edit in Photoshop, and use BMP2000 to open/save.) And one experiment seemed to show a wide barren area beside the actual river image; as though all the sim's vegetation was cut back away from the water. These old BMPs are tricky! I will keep experimenting. In the meantime, I found an old BirdsEyeView river texture which is more to my liking. There must be, because I tried that also, and it didn't work. Of course, that may also be pure operator error!! :(
