FSX FPS limiter vs External FPS Limiter

Featured Replies

Hi all,There has been written a lot about this, but I wanted to share my experinces on this.Last year I always used the FPS Limiter 02 with FSX , because it gave me higher framerates than the internal limiter when set to the same value.E.G. flying with the CS 757 in a certain area I got framerates from 15-30 when using the internal limiter alone and 22-30 when using the external limiter and FSX limiter set to Unlimited. The last couple of days I did some test flights over the Netherlands ( Schiphol and Amsterdam ) with NL2000v4 enabled using the default Cessna 172. Also ASE with multiple cloud layers and foggy weather.Using the external limiter set to 25 and the internal limiter to Unlimited framerates where 8-23.Then I tried the internal limiter set to 25 and framerates where 13-21.After that I tried with the internal limiter set to Unlimited. Framerates 33-57 ! I did some other flights and got the same results. What do you guys think of this and what are you experiences ?

I have noticed pritty the same behaviour regarding to unlimited vs. limited (inside FSX). when I set the limit to 30 FPS it lasts for some minutes ant than falls down to arround 10. If I set it to unlimited I get arround 30-40 or more, depending on aircraft and scenery. It´s really a strange behaviour. I didn´t try this exernal limiter till yet, although I have it on my system, but I´m just too lazy to start it via the batch file.

Best regards, Steffen

The difference between the two is caused by the fiber_frame_time_fraction in the fsx.cfg. If you set this value to 0, the FPS with the internal limiter will be approx. equal to the FPS using the external limiter. The thing is though that you may experience a loooot of blurries if you set this one to 0. I am using the external limiter, though the internal limiter is smoother.. I just can't stand the blurries. This is what I can tell you about this, I hope someone else could jump in and explain the technical background of this issue :)

Best regards,

It's not so much the probable extra FPS with the above examples mentioned, I dont really care about that, it's the cure of FPS jumping up and down thats important to me.Other users with high end rigs dont use it any more, NIckN is one of them AFAIK...

Luckily for me I do not have blurries.I remember 2 years ago I had to use the External Limiter to have smoother flights. Now , perhaps due to better hardware and these tweaks, the internal limiter set to Unlimited seems the best choice for me.I use a tweaked fsx.cfg file with the following extra tweaks :[bufferPools]RejectThreshold=131072[GRAPHICS] --------------> Shader 3ALLOW_SHADER_30=1SHADER_CACHE_PRIMED_10=1693500672SHADER_CACHE_PRIMED=1693500672[Main]FIBER_FRAME_TIME_FRACTION=0.10[Display]TEXTURE_BANDWIDTH_MULT=40[JOBSCHEDULER]AffinityMask=14[sCENERY]SmallPartRejectRadius=4[bufferPools]RejectThreshold=131072
