I5 2500K VS I7 2600K

Featured Replies

Well, that I'm posting in the hardware forum indicates I'm about to do something expensive (partly in prep for the NGX but don't tell PMDG that)... I'm about to pull the trigger on a Sandy Bridge build. New everything. So the question I'm about to ask comes down to Sandy Bridge vs. Sandy Bridge:Which one should I pull the trigger on? There's a $100 price gap, so I better see a 100$ difference! <_< Keep in mind this PC will be used for FSX and DCS A-10C only! I realize the technical differences. I'm just having a hard time relating them to FSX performance. As I don't have a motherboard thanks to Intel's fumble, I'm grabbing parts on Newegg while they're free shipping. I wish they'd hurry up, April's a long way away! I'm also eying a GTX 560. Will I be missing out if I forgo the 570/580?

If you do any video editing or any applications that use hyperthreading then the 2600K is the way to go but if you are going to game then the 2500K is the way to go as fsx and most games don't use hyperthreading.

yep, save the money and put it towards something else. It seems like I benefit from HT only if I'm running Tileproxy, but otherwise no difference in FSX.

Well you both just saved me $100, then!... Maybe. I may still purchase the 2600K because I'm inevitably macho when it's all set and done.Coincidentally one of you owns a 2600K and the other a 2500K... Both of you have the same response! :Big Grin:

the 2600K seems to overclock a bit higher too (100 - 200MHz). Nothing that would make it worth the extra 100$ IMO

Haha, that's more or less the reason I bought the 2600k to begin with - figured I had to have "the best"! If it helps you out at all, consider that I'm currently running mine with HT disabled. It allows me to run it a bit faster with lower voltage and less heat. No point in getting "the best" for the purpose of having "the best" considering it will only be bested by socket 2011 at the end of the year Big%20Grin.gif Put the $100 towards a macho SSD or something... just focus on building a well balanced system. Hehe, my upgrades were also done in anticipation of the pending 737NG release!

Hmm. Wonder why that is? To save $100 I'll put more voltage in. :Secret:

I almost went with the 2600K because I want the best. Plus saying i7 sounds better than saying i5 but I still went with an i5.Hey Dario, I noticed that in your sig it says your GPU has only 1mb of ram. LOL

Thanks for talking some sense into me! :Drooling: In the mean time, how's that 250 GPU handle FSX? I'll have to drop my old GTX260 into the rig while I save for a more expensive one. I'll be selling the 460 along with my current PC.

It's hard to say without comparing my system to another Sandy Bridge system with a high end card - I really have no clue. Perhaps I will do an FSXmark07 comparison with somebody soon now that you have piqued my interest. I'm happy enough for now that I'm going to wait for the release of Kepler at the end of the year before buying a really high end card. I was really hoping the new Kepler GPUs would come out this summer, but I fear that may not be the case.
