  1. I've had the new computer built up for a couple weeks now and all I can say is WOW, it's so smooth! Never thought I'd see these kind of frame rates in Microsoft FS.
  2. I went ahead and talked myself into ordering an AM5 board, new RAM, and a 7800X3D 😁. Seemed wrong to hold my 4080 back for much longer.
  3. Finally upgraded my case and GPU. Picked up a FormD T1 SFF case and an Asus ProArt 4080 Super. Obviously, my system is extremely bottlenecked by the 5600X CPU now, but I'm trying to hold off upgrading CPU until the 9000X3D processors are available in a few months. I'm curious if upgrading to one of the AMD X3D processors will get rid of the micro stutters, or do you folks with the 7800X3D / 4080 combo still experience them? FPS are great otherwise. Perhaps it's worth picking up a 5800X3D to replace my 5600X for the next ~6 months? Can't figure out how to insert images in the post, but feel free to check out: https://www.dropbox.com/scl/fi/sx0pzoqab969u765k5rkb/FormD-T1-GPU.jpg?rlkey=ijcu825xhj4qqojds7vbnyy7n&dl=0 https://www.dropbox.com/scl/fi/o8tkmhj4aybbuxugfb7jm/FormD-T1-Motherboard.jpg?rlkey=12epcyn72etvgogrk4soiafnf&dl=0 https://www.dropbox.com/scl/fi/gowgeixu2enver4ly3jb1/Screenshot-2024-08-22-140309.png?rlkey=fk1hyp2sq9iaak0gxaidwuj42&dl=0
  4. Not to mention hyperthreading also generates a lot more heat unless you disable it. Buy the biggest baddest i5, spend the rest of the money on good components, and you will have a very "high-end" flight simming computer.
  5. I'm on the fence on this one recently. In the past I've been a strong supporter of owning a black/white laser printer at home and leaving the photo printing to a professional camera shop. Now that my wife and I are both out of school and much less reliant on the printer for printing reams at a time, I really wouldn't mind having a do-it-all multi-function color laser. With that said, I can't speak highly enough of Samsung. Partially because HP ticked me off with their refusal to provide W7 drivers for their ubiquitous 1012 series laser printers, but more so because my wife and I had an ML-1851ND through grad school and it has been and continues to be completely flawless! At the end of the day, take your best photos to a professional to be printed. I mean a real professional - not Walgreens or CVS. You will be thrilled with the quality!
  6. It's been a few months since I've been on the forums. I return to see you guys all talking about removing heat spreaders and lapping processors. I thought you had all gone extreme overclocking and drank the cool-aid, but apparently this is the norm for these new Ivy Bridge processors?
  7. I've come back to this thread a few times, each time trying to figure out how to respond regarding $3500. Well done, Word Not Allowed! I couldn't agree more.
  8. I was of the understanding that positive pressure provides better cooling and minimizes dust buildup inside the case if you have filters on all the intake fans.
  9. I agree with ALL of the comments above, but I'm not 100% sure whether or not these new cards will actually run cooler. While the performance per watt may be better, the # of stream processors is three times that of the 580. I haven't been doing much FSX recently as I finished school and became a real person, so I'm content to hold on to this GTS250 for some time yet. I had originally planned to pick up a really nice card this year, but I'm preparing to buy a new bike, so that's not going to be happening. I'll be happy to get a GTX560 equivalent.Nice sunglasses, Stephen!
  10. I hope he didn't get a HAF, because I completely bashed them.
  11. more negative ratings than I can overcome... :sorry: I think this is the post that should have ended this thread.
  12. Ben, you seem to forget that It's not for you to judge how others spend their money. I suppose you can, but your judgees may very well make a lot more money than you and the value of a dollar likely means something very different to them. It may not be the most efficient use of dollars, but nonetheless that doesn't always matter.
  13. I don't tend to trust news regarding graphics cards, but this actually seemed to be written in a believable fashion... regardless, I think I'll wait for GK110 to launch later this year!
  14. Haha, I was just about to call overkill on the PSU, but I see you beat me to it in your sig! Great PSU regardless! What's the rating on it (gold/platinum)? I'll be looking forward to the photos of the finished product.
  15. Since looks are completely subjective, I was really trying hard to keep my negative opinion of HAF cases to myself, but now that you brought it up I'll start pouring the haterade! They're UGLY, they're tacky, and they look like some sort of transformer I should have owned at the age of 14. Then again, I've always taken myself way too seriously... even my 650D feels tacky at times. I'm really tempted to build up a super awesome mATX rig.For us flight simmers, a mATX rig is all we really need. Most of us only run a single GPU as that's all that's necessary. With super high capacity mechanical drives and super high speed solid states, I don't know why anybody needs more than 2 or 3 hard drives in a system either. I don't even use my optical drive any more. I already use the 5.25" bays for hard drives so I can remove all the 3.5" bays. The cool thing about the Fractal Arc Mini is that you can do all sorts of stuff in it with no modification. Check it out - 2x120 radiator up top, 2x120 at the front, and a single 120 on the bottom:
  16. So many HAF recommendations. How about the Fractal Design ARC Mini?
  17. AAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHH, OH MY GOD!!!! IB is may be delayed afterall!!!! What are we going to do!?SOURCE
  18. sourceI know none of us are too interested in this nonsense, but at least we can glean that IB can survive similar voltages as current 32nm chips! The really good news is that this isn't one of those pointless tests where they disable HT and all but one core.
  19. I really like my Corsair 650D (see my build photos here), but their new 550D seems to be a great improvement from what I can see.
  20. Haha, I've got a photoreal scenery project currently on hold because my 1TB drive is currently full of it. An SSD is not even feasible for that! I can tell you that it's very high quality scenery and yet I don't experience blurries whatsoever. I tested FSX on my SSD at one point and other than initial load times, there was no difference in performance. Load times with the photoreal scenery are HORRENDOUS!...but so worth it!Anyway, if you're not the type to load up FSX with an abundance of addons, then purchasing a smaller 120GB SSD may be worth it to you - especially as SSDs drop below $1/GB as they have slowly been doing lately. Load times and even hard drive noise (if your case is particularly noisy) are legitimate factors to consider.Trust me - I would love to believe SSD's make a huge difference, but they're just not the magic bullet we all wish them to be.
  21. You need to change your strategy. Next time say 16 year old MAN... with confidence! :Big Grin:As Stephen said, don't spend a penny until you have enough to buy the right machine. £200-£300 will leave you feeling like you wasted money on a minor improvement whereas a well planned £600 will get you very decent performance. Find some work (get creative), save save save, and you'll not only get your machine, but you will get your parents pride and approval as well for your determination....if they're good parents
  22. It's an old thread, but I'll bite... I don't know that I would agree with the word "known". It has certainly been claimed by some, however.
