Looking to change from HD5830 to nVidia card

Featured Replies

Hello, as the topic title says I'm looking to change my graphics card for an nVidia one, seeing how much better these seem to work with FSX. I'm looking at a GTX460, a GTX470 or a GTX560, which would cost about 135, 190 and 210€ new, each.Which one should I consider? Should I get a specific brand? Is, for example, a GTX470 at reference frequency still better than a factory overclocked GTX460 at 815MHz?Here's my system:Intel i5 750 @4GHz4GB of DDR3 RAM at 1600MHz running 7-8-7-24ASUS P7P55D Evo MotherboardHIS ATi 5830 (my current graphics card)1280x1024 19" MonitorRegards,Fabrizio

At that price, I would go for the 460. The 470 is a previous generation product (needs more power, runs hotter). The 560 is faster, but that is quite a price difference..A rough indication of relative performance in FSX can be seenby comparing a few specifications that matter in FSX (found on the nvidia.com site):Texture Fill Rate: 460 - 38, 470 - 34, 560 - 53Memory Bandwidth: 460 - 115, 470 - 134, 560 - 128All the reputable brands are OK. I like Asus because they tend to have well cooled, quiet cards. Others like EVGA..Read the reviews!!

Thanks! After reading some reviews and looking around I went with a GTX560ti from Gainward. Will write back on how it is for reference to future shoppers!

I would expect you to be quite happy with your purchase, but would like to hear!

As promised, here a short first impression: using the 8xS AA mode as described in the PMDG forum, it works great! 8xSQ is also viable, but I wouldn't go very near big airports. Just to try I overclocked it to 900MHz using Afterburner, and it is stable with stock voltages. Will have to look into overclocking it more, but it is a very promising start! I can recommend it to anyone not willing to get a 570 or 580 due to their price and/or power requirements.
