GTX 590 vs. ATI HD 6990

Featured Replies

Anyone can tell me which card actually is better (when released) ? I cannot decide between GTX590 or HD6990 ? I would like to use 2560x1200 resolution at my 30" display. Any opinions and hints are welcome. Thanks a lot.

Asus Rampage II Extreme X58, i7 920 @4 GHz, 12GB RAM OCZ Platinum @1.646MHz 7-7-7-20 (1T), Noctua NH-U12P SE1366, Sapphire HD-5870 Vapor-X , 30" Dell @2560x1600 pixel, SSD Intel X-25 M for OS, 1 TB WD Caviar Green for FSX, be quiet Dark Power Pro P7 650W AT, Creative X-Fi Titanium Fatal1ty Champion + Teufel 5.1 Surround Set, LG Blu-Ray-ROM LG DVD+/-RW, Aerocool FP-01 Flip-Panel, Lian Li ARMORSUIT P60 black, Windows7 64bit Ultimate.

GTX590 is the better chice: For starters, the HD6990 is a dual GPU card and FSX doesn't really use the second GPU very vell. In addition 2 GPU cards tend to increase FSX's already troublesome stutters. Also with 375W peak power you will need an upgrate to your home's electrical wiring (just kidding!) If you're set on ATI, go for the HD 6970: It's got faster clocks, runs cooler and is half the price.Me, I have a (now) lowly HD 4870X2 and I could write a book on what a 2 GPU card doesn't do for FSX.Cheers,- jahman.

Thanks for the clarification! Then I would stay away from the 590 as well, at least for FSX.Cheers,- jahman.
