Repainting a .bmp Template?

Featured Replies

Hi guys,I want to repaint the F4u7 Corsair: http://www.simviation.com/cgi-bin/syb2.cgi?section=vintage&file=F4U1ACorsairProject.zipI want to change the base colour from dark blue to any other colour i.e red, yellow or white and keep all the rivets, bolts and lines ectHow do I do this? The template is in .bmp format and not in a layered .psd?I have seen other re paints of this aircraft like the Coke Usa in Red which the painter has kept the Rivets and lines.Uly

You`ll have to look for a paintkit.I`s unlikely to find a white livery.I think having the original paintkit is vital.RegardsLeen

You can often convert a coloured texture set to a "white" (very ish) plain multiply layer if you open the bitmap single layer texture and desaturate to greyscale and adjust lightness, contrast and intensity. If the texture is multi-coloured, you sometimes need to us a "clone brush". Once you have a "white" texture, if you have done it with enough contrast, you can "multiply merge" this over your colour sheet and get shadows and rivet lines. Not necessarily the most perfect way, but it is possible. Either that or send an e-mail to the developer and ask.Let me take a look at the Corsair though. I see it's a download from "all nodes busy" simviation, so I'll post this answer now, before my internet line seizes up :DMaybe I can spot somthing that will help...

Right, I have had a look at those textures in the so-called "blank" textures. I see what you mean about the blue backgrounds. Here's the original fuselage side:So... fully desaturate the blue bitmap. This is what happens:Now invert the image:Hey presto! Now you can "paint" some colours and overlay them with this image... don'T forget - multiply merge! Now - the main problem is finding what goes where. It is a pity there are no wireframes to guide you. You can use programs like "ModelConverterX" to create a wireframe. I shan't go into detail here - that's a whole different animal, but using ModelConverter and UVMapper, you will find it possible to create wiredrames. Beware the copyright issues. Ask the developer or ask him to provide the wireframes. I have only given a very rough demo on only one texture sheet here. You can finetune the desaturation, inversion and contrast. Don't forget shading and other detail too... AND WRITE DOWN exactly what you do to the first texture sheet so that you can repeat for the others and get the same levels of light and dark.

Thanks Chris,I did not think of this approach , did not do it myself either.I always was lucky enough to find ( or compose ) white (greyscaled) blanks ,or the original paintkit.Mulitple colored items are more complicated and need more experience. If you allow me I`ll convert this topic to a question/answer in the Painting FAQ`s.As I wrote on the Painting FAQ`s introduction:I must emphasize I am not having a complete knowledge about repainting.I am just a collector of answers and questions. You just brought in a good one. Thanks again pal.Leen

Help yourself... My philosophy is "If you can see it in your mind's eye, then it can be done on a PC" (maybe not yet, but where there's a will, you never give up)
