April 16, 201115 yr Gentlemen,Could someone tell me why my fancy new logo that I just added to my airplane presents out of focus? It's the default Beaver. I converted the DDS files with DXTBmp and edited them with Photoshop. The result looks fuzzy; The logo was created in Photoshop and looks fine as a JPEG. I did have to resize it to make it fit on the airplane, it was too big. Here's what I did, maybe you can spot what I missed. I opened the DDS texture file from the Beaver with DXTBump, flipped it and sent it to Photoshop7. The .bmp file has 1024 textures at 72 pixels/inch. I then saved the .bmp file as a .psd file, so I could add layers. I opened my logo file which was a flattened .jpg file of 1024 pixels with a size of 13cm x 8cm at a resolution of 300 pixels/inch. (118 px/cm)I selected my logo and dragged it to the textures and resized it using the Edit function in Photoshop. I saved the file and flattened it and then saved it as a 24 bit .bmp file again. I went back to DXTBump and reloaded the file, flipped it back and saved it as a DDS5 file. It appeared fine when I looked at it in the DXTBump window, but it was pretty small to see accurately. I am very new at this and perhaps I have missed the obvious so any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks up front.Best to all,Fritz
April 16, 201115 yr Have a look at the Painting FAQ`s on top of the paintersforum.Question/Answer nr 7There is no need to change the filetype so often*.DDS>>DXTBmp>>flip and export to PhotoShop>>edit in paintshop (just adding layers and editing)>>save the file(no need to save it somewhere to a typefile, just save)>>import and flip in DXTBmp>>save to dds again.During the editing in Photoshop DXTBmp should remain active , so the texture can be imported in DXTbmp after editing and saving in Photoshop. When you export a file from DXTBmp to a paintingprogram it will appear in this program as a file called norm.bmp.We can make layers on this norm.bmp and just save it, not save it somewhere and store it, just press the "save button" , then DXTBmp will be able to import the norm.bmp from the memory of the paintingprogram. Its vital to keep DXTBmp AND Photoshop active during the whole procedure.*There is only a need to save the file in Photoshop to a layered PhotoShop file when you want to save the file for later editing purposes.Keep in mind doing this the alpha-layer will be lost.Working the way I described above will keep the alpha intact.RegardsLeen de Jager
April 16, 201115 yr Author Thank you very much, Mr de Jager. Sorry, I missed the FAQ's and didn't think about looking for them. Appreciate your help.Best,Fritz
April 16, 201115 yr You`re welcome Fritz , please call me Leen.A logo like the hat you made is full of tiny details.Due to the fact the texturesheets dimensions being 1024x1024 the hat has to be scaled dow dramatically resulting is a huge loss of detail.Try the following:Export the dds from DXTBmp to photoshop and enlarge the texture to 2048x2048 , then add the hat.Save the file en import to DXTBmp.Now export the alpha to Photoshop , enlarge the alpha to 2048x2048 and save , import to DXTBmp again and then save to DDS ( mind the flipping)Now you`ll have a far more detailed hat on the plane. The rest of the paintwork stays low res .It`s clear doing complete paint in high resolution everything on this texturesheet will be more crisp and detailed.CheersLeen
April 16, 201115 yr Just to add to Leen's reply , when you resize textures in FS X to 2048 X 2048 ( or 4096 X 4096 ) , you also have to edit the fsx.cfg .The line to edit is : TEXTURE_MAX_LOAD=1024 <------ change to either 2048 or 4096Otherwise FS X will use the textures as if they are 1024 X 1024 . Every time you change any settings in the sim you will also have to re - edit this line .There are program's that do this automatically for you and normaly start when you load the sim . Texture Max Load editor is one ( don't have a link but I am sure that Google will know ) .Jphn
April 16, 201115 yr Author Thank you, Leen and John, that's a big help. I made some progress and I will have another go trying changing the texture size. One day I'll understand how all this works. I hope. I still need to figure out how to make the rivets and things show through the new logo. First things first, though. Thanks again.Cheers,Fritz
April 16, 201115 yr Set the layer with the logo to < MULTIPLY > . The only drawback is tat the colours will appear slightly darker than they were , it just makes your logo slightly see-through .John
April 16, 201115 yr Author Thanks, John, appreciate your help, but I have never seen the "multiply" choice in the layer window. I only have Photoshop 7, does that make a difference? I'll look again. I am obviously losing my mind. Ahh, the golden years...Best,Fritz
April 16, 201115 yr See Fritz,Right mouseclick on a layer in the layers-menu (right under corner of your screen)then choose "Blending options"Then you get this screen. Now you`ll find your way I think.CheersLeen
April 16, 201115 yr I ( still ) use PaintShopPro 7 , even though it is by todays standards " ancient " but I can't imagine this effect not being in any drawing programs these days .For PSP7 click on VIEW ---. then TOOLBARS ---> then LAYER PALETTE .Click on the layer with the logo and change the layer properties ( see screenshot ) . John
April 17, 201115 yr Author Beautiful! Many thanks. It's called "produit" in French, which is why I was puzzled. Maybe now I can start learning this stuff. Certainly appreciate all you help, Leen and John.Best,Fritz
April 17, 201115 yr Thats funny. In english it`s "multiply" , in dutch it`s "vermenigvuldigen" wich is exactly the same. The result of multiplying is "the product" in english en "het product" in dutch. So the english and the dutch are talking about the action of te layer and the french are talking about the result of the same action. As I said , ist funny.Cheers/amitiésLeen

April 18, 201115 yr Author Yes, I was looking everywhere for "multiplier" and then when I saw your post with the window where I should have been looking I finally understood. Yep, it is funny. The French terms for a lot of the Photoshop actions can be very confusing. Cheers,Fritz
