Can't get it to work

Featured Replies

Got a problem here. Don't know what I'm doing wrong but I got it to work fine the other day and that's the only time I've been successful.A panel comes up on the screen but for some reason it won't work. I've clicked it in a clear space as suggested but it just won't work when I key the numbers. Strangely, part of it is working because its listing mileage and frequencies. However, I've looked through the manual and the panel I get doesn't seem to be one of those many that are pictured in it. It doesn't start with 'CID....' but something like 'ODM...', then gives other information and the last line says '3 Ground Clnce'.Perhaps one of you experts is familar with this panel and can tell me what I should do, or what I'm doing wrong to get it working. If you don't recognise what I'm getting I'll send a picture of it.I'll be grateful if you can help please.John

John, what version of FSUIPC are you running? The current version is 4.70cBob

What version of FS and what operating system (Win version?)First be sure you are using the correct newest FSUIPC from the links at the forum top (as Bob suggested - 4 is for FSX, 3 for FS9).If advdisp.dll is in your modules folder rename the extension. It is no longer used.If the menu items are still distorted then the problem is a bit difficult to solve. In the FSUIPC general tab be sure you select multiline display.Try RC first with a default aircraft and no other add-ons running to narrow the troubleshooting field.Your windows installation should be set up for the US standard to insure correct display characters are used as well as certain keyboard and data input. I believe the FSUIPC produced RC window uses your Windows system font.

Ok you two. Thanks for replying. The FSUIPC is version 4.7There is no advdisp.dll in the modules folderI'm sure 'multiline display' is ticked in the FSUIPC but I'll check when I turn on FSX to see if it will work with a default aircraft. If it doesn't work then, I'll start right over and go right back Step 2 page 26 and go through the whole business again. If it doesn't work then I'll probably give up.Incidentally, there's no way I will be willing to change my keyboard to the US standard if that's what you meant Ron when you said; 'Your windows installation should be set up for the US standard to insure correct display characters are used as well as certain keyboard and data input'. That would create too many more complications with my other activities on this computer. What I really fail to understand was that I had it working beautifully. It's true I didn't fly because it was too late but I was taxiing according to the Radar Contact ATC instructions and the keyboard keys were responding correctly. However, it has proved to me that it can work and really I can't believe that its anything but a simple mistake I'm making myself somewhere.I'll come back to you when I've had the opportunity to set up a flight and let you know how I get on. JohnPS - Ok, I've been through it all again to no avail. This is the panel I get;capturepej.jpgI've tried the numbers, I've amended the frequencies on the radio panel, clicked in the spare space. Nothing works! With apologies for the quality of the panel.John

This is a PPS.I've got it working now and just had a flight Brisbane to Sydney so I'm learning! The problem was I think using the '/' or '\' or '\\' after the letter for the drive address! It works with '\\'!I'm going to have to raise the voice sound level as I'm finding it difficult to hear and I had a bit of trouble adjusting the transponder code. I finally did it but it took me three quarters of the journey. Just shows how ignorant I am!:( Someone told me it was a stiff learning curve. They were not wrong but just getting it to work at last seems to me to be a minor miracle. So now I've got to set aside some time over the weekend to get the sound up and learn the language!Golf tomorrow. I'm better at that than I am with this!:( I've found how to find the runway. Just follow the plane in front!LOL.gif I'll get out of your hair now for a little while. Thanks again for trying to help.John

If you want your RC characters in the in-flight menu window to be white make a safe copy of FSUIPC.ini in another folder somewhere outside of FS and modules. Then edit with Notepad or Wordpad adding this line in the [General] section:WhiteMessages=Yesto make the text clearer. Save the file in text mode if using Wordpad keeping the FSUIPC.ini name.

Thanks for this tip Ronzie. You obviously think I don't have enough to contend with at the moment trying to learn how to use Rafar Contact :( At the moment I'm still trying to discover if I have to keep on typing in the path to FSX each time!Actually, it was the image capture on here that didn't show up too well and was what I was apologising for. Red is not perhaps the best choice for text in that font size but I can read it ok and its clear in the sim. I might try the tip when I've got the actual operation of Radar Contact under my belt properly. I know its out of character but the yellow of the emoticons would show up in the sim panel better than anything. I suppose much depends on where you choose to display it. I always have it bottom left.I keep forgetting to ask and can't find it in the manual anywhere, but what key do you have to use to change the destination the second time?John

You should not have to type in the path to FS9 each time for RC except when rebuilding the scenery database. Are you on a network or do you have a virtual only name for your FS drive? Two "\\"s should not be required. Generally when using "\\" that refers to the shared folder name on a network. For example, under Win XP, my path is:h:\program files\microsoft games\flight simulator 9for scenery rebuilds. The Flt/Wxr path is set in RC 4 build 3845 by browsing and highlighting the folder as in the attached image. That should be retained but every time that path browser opens it will not point to your saved setting. Be sure if you installed from CD your RC folder attribute is not set for read-only by using Win Explorer to go to that RC folder and right clicking on it.You should not need a new key to set destination paths to FS. If you reinstall RC to a different drive or reformatted drive you will need a new key to get past initial installation. You get that by sending in the new product code with the automatic registration process if RC goes to the registration screen. Unless you move RC the product code should have remained the same and therefore retained the same key to enter in the registration. Try reentering the e-mail delivered key again to see if that works insuring that any preceding or trailing spaces or whatever are removed from the key entry space after the copy/paste process.

Sorry RonziePerhaps I didn't make myself clear. I wasn't referring to the product keycode. I was referring to the key on my keyboard to press; 'to change the destination the second time?'. I should have continued; 'while in flight'.As I said, its working well now and I've also raised the voice volume a little while cutting down the environment and engine noise a bit, so that should make the controllers voices sound clearer against the general hubub.Have a nice Easter.John

I am so pleased. I've finally managed to complete a flight!Just to prove it, here I am safely parked at East Midlands (Nottingham) Airport;2011425141625868copy.jpgIt does take some guts to wait for the responses in Radar Contact. You begin to wonder if you're going to have time to get permission to land before you're down!:( One of the difficulties I've had is finding the transponder on the aircraft. On this Quest Kodiak its not mentioned in the flight manual at all. And, of course, there's not so many times it has to be corrected in FSX!One suggestion I do have though is if in some future update it would be possible to allow us to type in the name of our own aircraft? I ask because one or two of mine and this is one, the Quest Kodiak. I realise it could present a difficulty in tranferring our typed name into a voice but there's a challenge for you.:( JohnThank you ImageShack

RC4 is meant for controlled flight only and a transponder is required enroute. You can take-off and land in uncontrolled airports but you still need a transponder. You can do a modification to your aircraft.cfg Radios section. After that you can 'steal' a transponder from another model you have and add it in a pop-up window with changes to your panel.cfg. Some are included in radio stack windows so see if it is a separate gauge in the panel.cfg of one of your default aircraft.I purchased way back when starting with FS8 FS PanelStudio from flight1.com. Get the download version for $25 US as it is easier to update. It turns panel changes and window view additions into an easy visual preview process much like many photo editors and avoids trial and error (consistent aircraft reloads too see your changes - it runs without FS running). I've modified many freeware aircraft adding gauges as necessary and modifying the panel bitmap to match instrumentation closer to what real world aircraft have in original and retrofitted panels. The are quite a few panels and gauges to download and install in the libraries here.Back to RC. Explore the manual sections on uncontrolled airport procedures. RC has provisions for taking off at uncontrolled airports and arrivals at non-controlled airports even without navaids. It will get you close and then tell you to navigate on your own. Some very small airstrips are excluded from RC4 data, namely those with runways less than about 1500 feet. This eliminated the problem of RC seeing those added short invisible pseudo runways used in the star/crosswind runway afcad technique to make FS9 and FSX make non-parallel runways simultaneously active. Unlike FS9 and FSX these runways will not be listed in certain functions like choosing a different runway in RC and RC will not see them as available runways.Eurocontrol has quite a few uncontrolled airport charts such as EGBM Tatenhill that you can take your Kodiak into. That is in the RC database and 8/26 is listed but so is 4/22. 4/22 must not be disabled in the FS scenery otherwise it would not be in the RC database. Eurocontrol offers upper and lower airspace routes if you need them. It is best to use a planner that supports navaid/intersection updates if you tend to use these charts. Of course Eurocontrol has all of the airport SID/STAR and instrument procedure charts for those airports so equipped. RC will accept any route .pln file created in FS9 or FSX formats taking its waypoints from that route. Only those very small airports are excluded from RC's runway database as noted.I don't have them installed but there are many freeware former RAF airports to download as well that you can add to FS (and RC's database).http://ead-website.ead-it.com/publicuser/public/pu/login.jsp is where you can get free registration for Eurocontrol charts.Another site for the UK only (registration not needed) is;http://www.nats-uk.ead-it.com/public/index.php.htmlClick on the AIP choice and then pick your airport list type on the left.

About performance:In RC options disable Display Text and do not enable the random PreRecorded chatter. Just use AI Chatter and Interact with AI. Keep an eye out for interim upgrades to FSUIPC4, the links at the forum top. Some changes have been made to accommodate the perforrmance load of ASE.

PS - Forgot to mention. I have all the Payware VFR UK Airports and also most of the RAF freeware. In fact I beta test for one of the airport developers. Its no great shakes for me to fly IFR in aircraft fitted with transponders. Because I rarely, if ever now fly FSX default aircraft, most of those I fly have them. It just takes a while to find'em is all.:( All the bestJohn
