May 12, 201115 yr As some may already noticed, JS41 has a 5.1 sound for FSX. If You have only 2.0 speakers, and look straight ahead, the prop sound is gone (or actually one can hear it if surround speakers are installed).I have somehow manage to have the sounds when looking forward, but the mid tones (FA's, copilot) are so quiet, I can hear them anymore. Is there a way to force the pmdgsounds.dll to have simple 2.0 speakers config? Bartłomiej Ender
May 12, 201115 yr I'm quite sure that the J41 still uses a significant part of the FSX sound engine. If so, Windows and FSX will appropriately mix the sound for your configuration provided it is set correctly in you're Windows Playback Devices stuff.Although, the high engine volumes is sort of a known issue, and tends to drown out a lot of the ATC and other associated sounds. The only real work around is to decrease engine noise in the FSX Sound options.Ensure your speaker configuration matches what is set in Windows (Windows 7 or Vista in this example):Right click speaker/volume control thinger in bottom of taskbarSelect "Playback Devices"You're default playback device should be listed. Select it (Typically "Speakers")In right hand side of Playback Devices window, select "configure"It will take you through a few steps to configure your speaker set up. Sometimes Windows may think you have a 5.1 set-up or something.Apply changes and close.Try it out in FSX, report back. Lemme know if this helps anything.Unfortunately though, I think it's just the way the sounds have been built in the simulator and the PMDG J41. I don't think it's unrealistic; typically the prop and engine noise is a little less audible in the cockpit of aircraft, particularly up front facing ahead.Hopefully it helps!Patrick Patrick Houghton

I use Asus Xonar D2 for sounds, MoBo soundcard for Voice communication. I also have Buttkicker uder platform, so I set 5.1 output in Asus control panel (BK is set to LFE/Central speakers connector). Windows knows about 2.0 full range speakers only. JS41 is the only A/C where I have to 'upscale' to 7.1 virtual surround to get rid of 'silent' props when looking straight forward. I always use VC, and panning with TIR gives really strange props sounds. I guess will have to get used to it... Bartłomiej Ender
May 19, 201115 yr Howdy,The fact that Window's isn't allowing you to set for a 5.1 speaker set-up is weird. I have no issue setting 5.1, or 7.1 systems in windows. What version of windows are you using?Ensure that you have the latest driver's installed for your soundcard. Windows' should have no issue correctly detecting your soundcard's capabilities. The reason the J41 is silent for you is it's one of the few aircraft with correct sound positions created during aircraft design. Actually most of the default aircraft are set as well. In my set-up, the default Lear and CRJ both have engine sound's coming mostly from the rear speakers...Having said all that, with your Window's sound set to 2.0...FSX should be downmixing everything to the front 2 channels...and you should hear all sounds regardless of head position. May 19, 201115 yr Author I have W7 Pro x64. Actually, I am considering Logitech Z-906 setup, but I am not sure, how FSX handle with multi speakers setup.I use headphones all the time, so 5.1 is not necessary a must.Do You think upgrading from outstanding 2.0 to average 5.1 would be the benefit? Bartłomiej Ender
May 19, 201115 yr Ahh I understand why you're having the issue. The fact you are setting the soundcard to output 5.1 with only 2.0 speakers with Buttkicker is why. It's sort of a mixed benefit for you, as having the Buttkicker connected to the center channel is probably the best way to do it! I wish I had the Buttkicker...haha new dimension to hard landings! You already have a spectacular sound-card...I would take the next step and purchase a multi-speaker set-up. Even a couple model's below the Z906 provide good sound.FSX actually handles true multi-channel set-up quite well....environment effects come from all angles, and other traffic and vehicles pan very nicely from all speakers when set up at the ground.Unfortunately, the let-down is very few payware and freeware aircraft have a sound.cfg correctly configured to allow FSX to take advantage of a multi-channel set-up. Many developers and authors just place the sound sources to get a good 2.0 mix and leave it at that. Many don't realize that FSX does a pretty good job of handling mixing and downmixing appropriately. So, honestly, for FSX, a 5.1 set-up isn't the biggest thing in the world. But you will continue to have the issue you described as long as you're soundcard is set to output 5.1 and only connected to headphones and the buttkicker :(.For other things though, it's spectacular...even a mediocre set of speakers make correctly mixed games and movies that much better. The Z906 is a very good multi-speaker set-up. Family friend just purchased that same set-up for a small Home-Theatre-PC set-up in his basement. Sounds excellent...although not sure what the wife thinks sometimes! The only thing that needs to be prepared is your neighbours!!Hopefully all this helps!S Patrick Houghton
