Desent problem

Featured Replies

Hi,I have a little questions over the desent rates wich the MD 11 does in the simulation. Wehn a flight plan is used the MD 11 desents very smooth after T/D with about 1000 fpm or a little bit more. But when I fly for instance at FL190 with about 280 knots (ATS is set on 290 knots) and I dial in 15000 feet and pull the altitude selector the plane starts to desent between 3000 fpm and 4000 fpm. When the speed resches 290 knots the plane goes on a desent rate at 2000 fpm. (Still very step but okay.) My question is about the 3000-4000 fpm desent. I know the plane is slower than the choosen ATS speed but is it normal that it starts to desent with 3000 fpm? Best regards,Jonathan Huschle

Hi Jonathan,When you pull the altitude knob on the FCP you are commanding an idle descent not a PROF (VNAV) descent. If you're at 280kts IAS and your ECON descent speed is 290kts the engines will go to idle and the aircraft will pitch nose down to capture 290kts IAS. This is the 3,000-4,000ft/min descent phase you're seeing. Once she's settled at 290kts the aircraft pitches up to maintain 290kts at idle power.

Best Regards,

Dan Parkin.
