Mystery error message when installing FS2004

Featured Replies

A friend of mine (not internet connected) is getting an error message when he tries to install FS2004. His first installation attempt went right through to the 4th disk before the message appeared -- now he can't seem to get past the 2nd disk and sometimes , the installation doesn't seem to want to start at all.The message says "" Installer can't write file ****.***to drive. Ensure that the hardrive is not full or the file is not in use by another programme". Each time this happens , the file named is different. His system is an Athlon XP 2400 with 512 meg RAM and he has 30 gig of Hdd available. His Cd is actually a Cd burner -- when I next see him , I intend to rebuild his paging file and also set his CD and Hdd to PIO instead of DMA for the installation.Has anybody else got any further recommendations or does anybody know of a list of FS2004 error messages. Thanks Barry

This message often comes up when trying to overwrite a protected file. Right-click on the file in the Windows Explorer, Properties and check the attributes...should not have "Read Only" checked. Only one possibility so hope it helps.Larry S.

Hi Barry,Had this problem a lot with a Samsung cd drive especially when installing Microsoft programs. Installed a new Sony and the problem went away. From what I can understand, some drives have problems when they try to read a copy protected disc. Try swapping the drive and see if the problem goes away.Ed
