July 20, 201114 yr Looks like you are going to need a 6 core to oc the replacement for 1366 platform as the quad core is not unlocked....maybe an expensive deal for the benefit of quad channel ram?http://www.zdnet.com/blog/computers/intels-three-sandy-bridge-e-processors-to-be-known-as-core-i7-3000-series-extreme-edition/6384 Simon
July 20, 201114 yr I would guess you need 6 cores to justify quad-RAM.Cheers,- jahman.I would guess you need 6 cores to justify quad-RAM.Cheers,- jahman.
July 21, 201114 yr Author Yup:)Does not look like any higher clocks than current 2600k models as the only unlocked units will be similar in clock speed to current 980\990x; I was expecting something like a 'new' 920 to be available to be overclocked. The 4 core unit does not look be overclockable similar to the the current plane 2600 non-k unit. Simon
July 21, 201114 yr Well this is going to put the cat amongst the pigeons for those that were waiting for LGA 2011.If the only way to get an unlocked multi is to buy the 'Extreme' edition (always $999 price tag) all I can say is 'Ouch' and 'Can you direct me to the nearest 2600k please?!!' July 21, 201114 yr Bulldozer needs to beat at least Gulftown. Maybe then Intel will be forced to lower the price of some of their enthusiast processors. There's still a good chance that Ivy Bridge brings affordable six cores in the mainstream range anyway, but even then, unless Tri Gate really pans out, I won't upgrade just to have two more cores I won't be using. The other factors are MSFlight: I'm not making any upgrades based on speculation, once we see how Flight works I'll adjust accordingly and with the most current technologies available, but chances are that it's a GPU bound engine... it better bePCIe 3.0: I'm getting a second GTX480 to play with SLI. I'll see if there's a perf hit going 8x8x + high AA
