Not sure whether I'm in the right forum here. I have the freeware AVG6.0 antivirus. Trouble is, you only know if you have trouble when you run it. Does the Pro ver. stop virus's before they can infect, or at least warn you that it is trying to. These last few weeks, I've had a few, after my son has had his mates round ( I wonder why ) Any advise would be welcome.Russell.

It should (freeware and pro version) - make sure you have the latest virus defs.

Thanks Ken, It's just that I'd run the antivirus yesterday (fully updated every couple of days) Today I followed my boy and his buddies onto the net. After about 5mins. I just suddenly had this "feeling" and checked the history, saw something dubious, so updated and ran AVG. And sure enough, I snared a virus, but, no indication that this sucker was on my PC. I could ban him, I know, in fact I do, but I'm too soft hearted and let him back on after a couple of days. I'll go for the Pro.ver. and see if it stops them at the border, instead of just removing them after the event, so to speak.Russell.

I have used AVG for many years Russell and, touch wood, have never been infected although I have had warnings of viruses in emails, mainly 'Your Paypal account is about to expire'.I wonder if you boy, or his mates, are turning AVG off?If you keep the def files up to date I don't think he could open an infected email, each time I have the warning the email has been dumped in the virus vault. Although I suppose you could open it from there, if you were daft, or nasty enough.

I've never had one thro' email Vulcan, it's when they go surfing the "girlie" sites. I let it go for a while (17,hormones rising, and all that) but it looks like I'm going to have to crack down hard. You could well have a good point with the turning off theory(I never thought of that) Thanks.Russell.

Are you running XP? You could set them up with a limited account - then they would not be able to stop or disable the service. You would have to set the AVG taskbar program not to run under their account, but the service would still run. As long as it is configured properly under your main account, it would run the same under other accounts. That is how I keep my mom's computer under control ;-)

Given those sorts of sites Russell you might want to take a look at SpyBot and/or Adaware.Adaware checks your system for any spyware ('phone home' type s/ware); Spybot does similar as well as checking for viruses and trojans.http://spybot.eon.net.au/http://www.lavasoft.de/Also use Ken's suggestion, if you run XP, and nail his account down so tight he can only play Freecell :-)Best of luck.
