HGS question

Featured Replies

Hello everybody, first of all, thank you very much PMDG for the flawless aircraft!! It is simply incredible to fly this authentic beautiy, especially for someone, who has no time for long haul flights and just want to do a short flight within europe. Perfect! Alright, now that i had my opportunity to thank you, here come my question: I couldn't find any kind of "tutorial" or explanation of how exactly the HGS works. I mean some kind explanation of what i have to type into the thing at the pedestral and how i have to interprete the symbology of the HGS. I must admit i have absolutely no experience with HUDs what so ever. The only thing i found what a kind of checklist for the HGS in the FCOM but nothing "more detailed". Thanks in advance for any small/big hint :) Dominik

The HGS control panel on the aft electronics panel is there to set the HGS modes. Basically there are the modes PRI, IMC, VMC and AIII. The mode selection works similar to nav radios - use the STBY button to change standby mode, use MODE button to swap modes. Other than that it's used to enter runway length and elevation. In flight the display will usually show the set elevation (the E field). To change the values simply hit RWY so it would show EL>, then enter TDZE in feet using the numpad. Now you may already hit ENT to confirm the changes but while you're at it you could set the runway length as well, so hit RWY again so it shows LN>, then enter runway length in feet. You can always switch back and forth between EL> and LN> as long as in input mode. When entries are correct hit ENT. Last but not least enter the glideslose using the G/S button in a similar fashion. If you have more questions, you said e. g. about symbology, feel free to shoot them away. sig.gif

Thanks for helping me out Etienne! Could you tell me in how far PRI, IMC, VMC and AIII differ? under which condition do i use each mode? Dominik

These different functions are explained in the FCOM vol1 SP10.5 and FCOM vol2 flight instrument displays, 10.12.The first part is info on entering data into the controller an then the second part in FCOM vol 2 is an explanation of the modes.Hope this helps
