How many layers of clouds?

Featured Replies

Wow, quite the spectrum here. Are you guys using Texture_Max_Load at 4096 as it says in the Intro doc for the NGX? Or have you lowered that along with your cloud resolutions? Thanks for the replies!
make the clouds 1024 which is fsx default but make sure in the fsx config it reads 4096. this will still show 1024 cloud texture as you have chosen from REX 2.0. In the weather setting make 1 layer but expand its height from say "3000ft - 7000" set as few2/8 and you see the difference and looks grand :) (Performance Boost, FSX don't like anymore than 2 layers starts to get slow in areas of built up clouds). cheers Steve

Yes, I have the Texture_Max_Load set at 4096. I've found that the HD clouds are nice, but they are a give and take. Actually everything in FSX weather is a give and take. I've lowered texture quality to be able to keep layers and range high. I also have set the max surface visibilty to 100mi and the maximum upper visibility to 60mi.

While we are on this subject, Does anybody know if there is a setting for good overcast clouds? The thing i hate most about FSX weather with REX and ASE is no matter how much rain and snow its dumping i can always see blue sky somewhere, takes some realism away. -Travis

I've noticed something similar with haze or visibiilty range. I'll have stormy overcast clouds and have good surface visibility. Luckily this has been hit or miss, or I lost the haze when the weather reloaded or fsx reloaded textures. When you have overcast weather are your clouds just patchy looking? So that you just a lot of space between them.

Definitely, I feel you on that - it's kind of tough finding a good medium since FSX has some crappy haze generation in the first place. What I find to be most realistic is (assuming you have ASE installed) go to the "Visibility Options" tab and check all three boxes - "Fog Layer Generation," "Disable Haze Layer," and "Enable Visibility Graduation and Smoothing." A graduation ceiling of about 5,000 ft AGL is pretty realistic to me. Then set "Minimum Surface Visibility" to 0 and "Maximum Surface and Upper Visibility" to something around 100 SM or lower. Also, under the "Cloud Options" tab I would increase "No Data Cloud Generation" as much as your system allows to decrease some of the patchiness. It's definitely hard to recommend a one-size-fits-all setting for ASE, it really depends on your system, what else you have running in the background, and your personal preference. I just wanted to see if I'm getting somewhat normal results compared to the rest of you. I really love the REX 4096 HD clouds and I want to keep them so I might have to make some sacrifices elsewhere. It's definitely a give and take mentality. You can't have it all. The NGX is really what it's all about in the end anyways and smoothness is key for true 737NG heaven. I'm going to play around with ASE this evening to see what else I can find. Thanks for all of your comments,
