August 24, 201114 yr Did anyone else experience the 5.8/5.9 magnitude earthquake on the East Coast yesterday? I was sitting at my computer reading the AVSIM forums when the earthquake struck. It came in as a rumbling sound and there's a lot of construction in my area so I thought it was all related to that. But it got louder and then the room started shaking a little and then more and more. It was the worse earthquake I had ever experienced and I now have total respect for those who live in earthquake prone areas. My house was shaking so much I thought it was going to collapse. In fact, I heard pictures and stuff falling down upstairs and I thought then the house was actually falling down. I was thinking the worse but never got up from my computer and just waited for the impending disaster. I was on the 2nd level of my just bought 3-story townhouse so evacuating was pretty much out of the question. About 30 seconds later it was over. Later I found out it was just pictures on the dressers and tables upstairs that were falling but it certainly sounded like the building was collapsing. I then surveyed the house for damage and there was absolutely no damage whatsoever. Not a crack, not a dish broken, no windows broken, nothing! I'm still totally shocked by that fact as my townhouse was literally swaying from one side to the other. I know others have experienced larger earthquakes but on the East Coast we are not prepared for earthquakes this large and many homes and businesses are not constructed to withstand a major earthquake but so far there was little damage at least in my area. Hope others who experienced this major East Coast event are safe too and no damage occurred. I know AVSIM headquarters is located very close to Mineral, VA too at Charlottesville and figure Tom and staff felt a few jolts. I live in Northern Virginia about 60 miles from the epicenter. Best regards,Jim
