September 1, 201114 yr Alright thanks, somehow I missed that. To be honest, I have little-to-none knowledge about Linux. That's why I asked about Exchange alternative, maybe under Windows. It's basically my first thing and I was looking for any good pointouts and where to start... yes Linux is a bit a of a toughy when you don't know much about it. But installation of Linux is very simple (it has a gui based + text based installation) I used to use Suse ( German ). The main hassle would be qmail and vpopmail but if you read a little it is simple. There may be a few programs under windows which I honestly would not be aware of. for qmail you qmail.org/top.html and for vpopmail user inter7.com here you will have to download the qmail and vpopmail source files. Plus you will need fetchmail which will be used to fetch emails from you pop account and deliver it to your virtual pop account. If you have a rig to spare or lying idle than you can give a try. Download Suse from opensuse.org . It should be around 4 GB that's where you start first. One question came into my mind is are you going to sync emails when roaming ? as for that you would at least require a static IP. Ryzen 5 1600x - 16GB DDR4 - RTX 3050 8GB - MSI Gaming Plus
September 1, 201114 yr One question came into my mind is are you going to sync emails when roaming ? as for that you would at least require a static IP. No, when roaming, no data at all. And I have a DynDNS account, which is being refreshed over my router accordingly. But my IP doesn't change anyway.
September 1, 201114 yr No, when roaming, no data at all. And I have a DynDNS account, which is being refreshed over my router accordingly. But my IP doesn't change anyway. Than you should be good to go. You probably may need a domain name on your IP as there is something known as Reverse DNS IP to domain mapping which is used with mail servers. But in linux you can configure your SMTP route to the gmx smtp server. seriously if you have that spare machine even a P4 linux is the way to go for emails and wide variety of things. Because Linux being free is cheap and stable. Even if it does not work out with linux than at least you know that the money has not been wasted. HEY NOT FSX THOUGH Ryzen 5 1600x - 16GB DDR4 - RTX 3050 8GB - MSI Gaming Plus

HEY NOT FSX THOUGH Gotta be some other subject from time to time! Alternatively, I was also hoping someone would chime in with some non-Linux suggestions! I will certainly see if I can get time to do some Linux stuff, and if I can get that machine up and running. Right now was looking at it, and it misses the CPU, mobo is here... I wonder only why CPU isn't. Maybe it's laying somewhere... hmmm......

I wonder only why CPU isn't. Maybe it's laying somewhere... hmmm...... haha hope you didn't to put that cpu in the current thinking you will get a boost. What cpu would that be ? As I said linux is a bit toughy. it does have a GUI like windows but that would only be good for using Desktop applications , for setting up the mail server it has to be done at the console which is different . like in win CMD you use dir for directory listing in linux it is LS . Don't worry about the installation it is simple. Remmeber to create different partitions for /home - /usr / var / boot and use Reisfer filesystem on the logical partitions. Sounds geek ha . Hey you can use kerio for windows and there is one more which is free I don't remember but let me check. http://www.google.co...iw=1280&bih=933 some lists on google. and this one is Kerio http://www.kerio.com/connect/download Damn I forgot about my clients old server they used Mdaemon. September 1, 201114 yr Kerio looks interesting, gonna check it out...CPU: Must be an old Prescott or so. I don't think it's as old as Northwood.

Kerio is nice , you just need to check what does it offer now in the server but I guess it will ok . As once you download the emails from the GMX server it would have an option of deleting them from GMX , you just need to sort it out for three different devices and that would be local sorting nothing online. Prescotts were a hot running bunch at least at 60-70 degrees. http://www.kerio.com/connect/wireless Ryzen 5 1600x - 16GB DDR4 - RTX 3050 8GB - MSI Gaming Plus
September 2, 201114 yr OK, CPU is nowhere to be found, unfortunately. I have the mobo, Asus P5AD2-E Premium, so it should work well I hope... 2GB of RAM on it. Big CPU cooler. DVD Drive, HDD and PSU are here.Which CPU is the question:P4 661? 64bit, Ebay around 20€? That's OK right? Also I want to keep power usage on minimum possible...And gonna need some cheapest VGA I can find...Totally out of that era...

The board only supports Celeron or pentium but being a 775 socket I thought it would support a Dual core but a Pentium with 2 GB is good, damn no gfx on the board bad bad , you can go for a cheap GFX card like the Nvidia 9500 or an ATI 3450 (PCIE) as you don't require a high end card or anything is lower would suffice. Is that PSU old ? I would check it before plugging it on the board . Ryzen 5 1600x - 16GB DDR4 - RTX 3050 8GB - MSI Gaming Plus
September 2, 201114 yr Is that PSU old ? I would check it before plugging it on the board . Heh, what is old... I dunno really. Probably as old as the board. I guess it should work, it did work until a friend of mine replaced that old computer...
September 3, 201114 yr Heh, what is old... I dunno really. Probably as old as the board. I guess it should work, it did work until a friend of mine replaced that old computer... Old as in for how long was it lying idle . Ryzen 5 1600x - 16GB DDR4 - RTX 3050 8GB - MSI Gaming Plus
September 3, 201114 yr Half a year or so. Sometimes the PSU's capacitor's leak and you have to even see the fan, so you have to check the PSU that is my advice you can buy a normal 450W . Here the non-branded PSU's cost around 800 INR that is within 20$ and I am using it. Ryzen 5 1600x - 16GB DDR4 - RTX 3050 8GB - MSI Gaming Plus
September 3, 201114 yr Thanks. I'll see what I can do. I don't want to invest too much into everything, since the question is still if it's gonna work as I imagine.

My suggestion is first try it on the existing system (the fsx ) install kerio and check other applications from theat Google list and if it suits your requirements then you can think about spending those 40-60 $ (PSU + CPU).
