Exchange/POP/IMAP... / Server

Featured Replies

I'm starting here my own thread, if there is anyone out here knowledgable about Exchange, Push Mail etc...Been googling for past 2-3 days and trying to set up things properly, but it seems harder than it has to be. My problem:- 2 private account on GMX (German free Email server)- 1 Company Exchange account (external)- Outlook at home- Iphone and Ipad Exchange is working wonderfully, so it can be omitted for discussion... All 3 devices have to have access to all 3 accounts, and it bugs me immensely that I have to delete emails from each device, since they are coming in by POP3. So, I wanted to change to IMAP, but within GMX that's only possible for business customers (paying customers). My wish is to I have one Inbox with my private accounts and one with my business (mind the thing that Iphone puts all together, I can live with that). Right now testing Hotmail's ability to register own email address, with the ability to call it up via "MAPI", Microsoft's own protocol for Hotmail, basically same as IMAP. But intervall at which Hotmail is checking POP accounts on GMX is apparently a snail-job. I've waited around 10 minutes for a test email to bounce back... Now, I do have some hardware in the basement, I might be able to scrap it up to an old computer and build something. What are my possibilities? How does this work? Do I have an internal server at home which I can access per Exchange from my mobile devices? Does it work with a simple IP, since I have a static one? I don't want to have a domain, since it's again a paying thing and also open to the world, good for attacking, DDosing, and using as spam server. Want to avoid that. Also very important is the sender identification and that when replying that it goes by the same originating email address... that's the current problem with one account on Hotmail, if I add another to it, to pick up two POP3 accounts, and I reply from Outlook, it will go via the originating Hotmail Email address. Are there also some simple solutions, short of Microsoft Server and Exchange Server? In the end, also, what OS should I be running for this? Do I really need latest and greatest for this? Can an old Pentium handle this well?

On the iPhone, you can go into Mail, Contacts, Calenders, select the POP3 account, select advanced, set "delete from server" to "when removed from inbox". I'm assuming the iPad will have the same option

I will be honest with you Word Not Allowed, I use to setup Qmail based servers (but not anymore) doing everything from junk filtering / anti-virus (Clamd) that was a single IBM X series server and that thing used to be on 24/7 plus it had a firewall / NAT / Ipsec / FTP access everything . And Linux never failed on me or failed to capture junk and viruses it is very powerful that's if you know how to set it up. So if you are looking for a different OS server than Linux is the one you should look at , I have never touched a microsoft mail server Exchange but you can check it out on google or some. Linux will do IMAP/POP. You can setup virtual email accounts to using Vpopmail + Qmail. Ipad has an inbuilt mail thing so you can setup multiple accounts. Do a search on Linux with Exchange may be you may get something. Linux is a very very stable OS .

HI Word Not Allowed, I am not sure I can help, but here it goes:I have to manage 1 personal e-mail account and 1 business e-mail account.I have one PC at home and I use iPhone, iPad and iTouch to check and view e-mails.On my PC, I set my Outlook Inbox to be the Master Inbox for both accounts: One inbox receives Personal account and Business account. (in their specific folders)End of the year, I transfer everything to a backup folder named Year xxxx and Sent/Received msgs.iPhone,iPad,iTouch. I don't delete because it is a pain.Pierre

OK, possible. But not the quite solution I was looking for... I basically want synced mailboxes.

Word Not Allowed Ipad has IMAP.

*Sigh* - I know Ipad has IMAP. But if you read my post carefully, you will notice I wrote that GMX doesn't give IMAP to non-paying customers. I have no intention of paying for IMAP. And I don't want to transfer (again) all my known Email addresses to hotmail or Gmail. Gmail sucks badly with its IMAP IMO, and Hotmail, while being OK as it seems, is only half the solution. And I have a bit of aversion of having my emails online. I prefer them on my devices and computers, but not on provider's server.

So you want a full synchronization between the 3 devices? Delete an email on 1 device, it deletes it on the others?

Oh sorry I didn't read the full post. Just want to know what kind of a mail transfer does GMX use ? like exchange / IMAP / POP3

GMX is POP3 only.

Correct. IMAP can do that. But the problem with IMAP is reply address. If I create collecting address at Gmail or Hotmail, when Emails arrives into Outlook, it replies automatically via the collecting address and not via originating address.
Just check here http://help.gmx.com/...w/pop3/outlook/ It shows both
Yeah, would be nice if it worked.http://service.gmx.net/de/cgi/g.fcgi/products/mail/topmailDown where it shows "Tarife im Vergleich", click on +... and when you search for IMAP you will notice it's not offered to Freemail customers.

Hmmm well if you read my post which is the 2nd one to your original you may get an idea. I don't anything about using windows to fetch emails except outlook , but you can do that in Linux using vpopmail and create virtual accounts. or create a virtual gmx domain in vpopmail. Hey Linux is completely free and also qmail and vpopmail.

Alright thanks, somehow I missed that. To be honest, I have little-to-none knowledge about Linux. That's why I asked about Exchange alternative, maybe under Windows. It's basically my first thing and I was looking for any good pointouts and where to start...

FWIW:

  1. I forward all my emails to my Gmail account (so I never have to sync),
  2. Access Gmail via POP3 (free),
  3. Configure Gmail to delete emails after I download them to my PC/iPhone/etc.

I wouldn't touch Hotmail woth a 10 foot pole. My dad has Hotmail and it's a PITA. Cheers, - jahman.
