I think it was performance related as the 748F was not meeting the full advertises performance specs either Boeing or GE advertised.

And what else woudl you use? What other freighter is as big, heavy, has a nose loader, with tight similarity to existing aircraft and is being mass produced? They would have figured these thigns out much earlier than three days before the planned first delivery.
