Outside Air Temp (from the ND or the temp gauge?)

Featured Replies

I hope the picture says it all, I get different readings on both instruments.Me thinks that the normal temperature gauge is the right one and the ND shows too low values. Temp on the ground was 32C. ASE showed 32, temp gauge did too, ND hat 14 or so. tempjk.jpg Whom to believe? unsure.png

Another one may be the transponder. Shouldn't he read some (pressure) altitude when he's running at 'ALT'?I can see the ALT announcement and the code, but no altitude readout.transd.jpgThe RXP users may place their stuff of course, but maybe some features could be added on that gauge. As a suggestion, maybe the 'R' symbol or a working VFR button and stuff. The 'off' button doesn't work so far, same goes for the stby mode. I can only toggle mode C at the moment.Additionally, density alt and maybe another temp readout would also be appreciated. However, a nice flying bird so far and the glass is a welcome new thing. Edited. Unfortunately, the RXP transponder doesn't look good there, but it shows the pressure alt readout mentioned on the GTX327 model (which the Carenado is too).rxptrans.th.jpg

The displayed ALT only means that the xpnder is in the altitude reporting mode.

Anything on the temp discrepancy (first post)? The RXP transponder (see image above) shows how the GTX327 is supposed to handle the 'ALT' mode I think. But, no biggie of course, although the current gauge looks very, very basic with even a 'stby' mode missing. Maybe those small things can be added.

Well, it wouldn't make much sense if the transponder would have the same functionality as the RXP unit and the price for the whole plane wouldn't be below 30USD in that case either wink.pngI don't know how the GTX327 should 'handle' the ALT mode differently except for the additional 'feature' that it shows the same altitude as the altimeter....I don't see any dicrepancy between the temp indication on the gauge and the EFD1000. Note that the gauge lags a lot if you pause the sim and/or slew.

I'd say that the transponder altitude always gets reported in pressure altitude only for a reason, but we may leave that topic as it is. I've used the RXP as replacement because it's there on my system.I may also have used another one from a 30 Dollar plane, so it's not so much price dependant as one may think. However, the notes about the missing standby mode and the PA display didn't have the intention to cause discussions of course. smile.pngAt least the stby mode is there in other Carenado planes with the old 'knob' transponder. Regarding the temps, I can see that 'OAT' is at 4 degrees C and that the temp gauge says some 20 degrees C on that above screenshot. There was no pause or slew in place.I'm currently cruising through some Australian desert at 9800ft, while the temp gauge tells me 18 degrees C and the EFD1000 talks -4 C.If that happens on my system only or if my eyes play tricks on me, please disregard my post.

Here's another one regarding the temperature issue. I've just loaded the plane with a fresh FSX start. ASE reports 31C, the temp gauge says 31/32C and the Aspen says 14C.tempxd.jpg

I've just tested it without ASE, so default FSX weather. If I tell FSX to use the 'clear skies (clears all weather)' preset, I get both gauges to show approx 14C.When I use the FSX weather and make it hotter, the normal temp gauge follows the actual temps being set up, while the Aspen gauge stays low. Here's FSX 'clear skies'.clearskiesfsx.th.jpgclearskies.th.jpg And here I made it hotter, still FSX weather engine only.hotterfsx.th.jpghotter.th.jpgI've let the plane running in that hotter condition for a few minutes, but the Aspen gauge didn't react on it and showed the too low temp all the time.

Without any external weather program (I performed this test with user-defined weather, changing only temperature), while sitting on the ground, the Aspen temp readout doesn't change, although I changed temperature from 59F to 75F to 90F to 32F. The OAT gauge reflected the correct temperature, but the Aspen remained unchanged at 15C. Climbing to 8000 feet, the Aspen OAT reads -1C regardless of how the user-defined weather temperature is set. Seems clear that they're determining temperature by different means.

Thanks for testing, Kurt. smile.png Looks like it's showing ISA values.

That makes sense. Nice troubleshooting!

Teamwork. smile.png Tricky thing, hides until you run some ISA deviation temps.
