November 3, 201114 yr This isn't a big issue. It's really just a question. I noticed that the engines will start regardless of fuel pump position. Same with the APU. Is this normal?
November 3, 201114 yr Engines can be feeded by gravity and there is a mechanical pump (dual pump) that pressurize fuel to the engine. However, to increase performances at high altitude and to prevent cavitation problems boost pumps are used to increase inlet pressure.Boost pump are also the way to balance tanks in case of an umbalance between wing tanks.APU will start using battery. Pumps are AC powered, so in cold and dark start, it will use its own DC pump to send fuel to the APU. Also the APU has the included mechanical pump, and will probably start without problems also if the DC pump is unserviceable. Also for the APU a boost pump will help, expecially in load condition (bleed and gen online)Apu is feeded normally by the left wing tank, if pumps are off, dc pump operates to feed the APU from the left tank, if a pump is avaiable (one of the 6*) dc pump stops to operate and fuel is sent from the tank with pump on.*if the selected pump is on the right of the crossfeed, you need to open it to feed the apu with that pump/tank Regards Andrea Daviero
