Popping scenery textures?

Featured Replies

I have an AMD XP2400 based machine, 512 meg DDR ram and a Geforce4 TI4200 vid card with 128 meg RamThe thing that disconcerts me about my current setup of Fs2004 is the way in which scenery textures suddenly "popup" into view. This is not the same as "slow texture fillin" when you change views -- I also get that though. The "scenery popup" seems to happen in 2 ways -- firstly when flying along and getting close to a city (say Chicago) , you can see a few buildings which indicate where the city is -- then all of a sudden when quite close to the city the rest of the buildings pop into view. Also while flying along with some scenery already in view, small segments of the scenery seem to pop out of view while others pop into view.Is there some tweak I need to make to make the scenery transitions happen more smoothly? Thanks Barry

Are you talking about the actual ground textures or the autogen buildings?Autogen buildings have a fairly short "on" distance for performance reason (I won't talk about the "off" distance here :-lol ). It's possible the buildings you first see are from the scenery library "landmark" buildings, which have the view distance set further away, while the ones that "pop" into view are the generic autogen buildings. If that's your problem, I'm afraid there isn't much you can do about it at this point. You can try using a lower zoom setting such as 0.7 instead of the default, which makes it look as if you're flying using a pair of binoculars. When (if) a proper autogen/3d object SDK is released, it might be possible to tweak the "on" distance for less popping (and also reduce the "off" distance for a 300% framerate improvement).
