November 21, 201114 yr Hello to all you Flt Simmers, When using GPS 500 (default) I just figured out how to program the ILS runway to land on after several years of Flt Sim. For example I want to choose SLC ILS 34R in which default is runway 35, I programmed in, 34R and it VTF to BESBE (just outside of SLC airport) I tried the load or activate to vectors but after all the loaded info it directs me still to land on runway 35. My question is does this really work? or is it because it is a flight sim and not the real world. It is a lot of info to program in just for nothing. I would like to get some possible feedback on this topic, I would greatly appreciate it from all the Flt Simmers out there.
November 22, 201114 yr If you mean you want the sim ATC to clear you to the ILS approach and land Rwy 34R, no the GPS is entirely separate and has no interaction with ATC. When ATC gives you the approach and runway, you have to use the ATC menu options in two separate steps: request the runway you want (34R) and then request the ILS approach (and optionally transition if not VtF). As far as the GPS is concerned, it pretty much works like the real one. You can load the approach and the runway is "part of" the approach, so there isn't the two-step process like in the ATC menu. When you activate the approach with VtF, it gives you the direction of the final approach fix (BESBE) but doesn't give you a magenta course line to fly since the assumption is that ATC will get you there. Once you get to BESBE the GPS will activate the final approach leg and give you guidance (though you should use the ILS signal for actual guidance). In event of a "go around" you can follow the missed approach legs that the GPS show you, and in the ATC menu select the option that tells ATC you are going missed and following the published missed approach procedure. One thing about the GPS though is on the missed approach it is typical to end with a hold, and the GPS won't always give you a correct entry into the hold. You need to be prepared to hand-fly the entry if you want to do it "right".scott s..
