Anyone figured out why brief pauses can happen w/ sound file execution?

Featured Replies

I have noticed very brief pauses on occasion when some .wav files play, for example ATC related files, sometimes. Anyone know what sorts of optimizations could improve on this? Is it a combination of a drive access plus bringing up the driver which makes the sound file play? How much of this might be attributed to drive access part of that? I ask because I notice when this occurs, if the same .wav file plays again during a session, there is no pause, which makes me lean towards drive access as a bigger player, and then makes me wonder if an SSD might improve on this.Noel

From this article it would appear in FS9 sound files would load NOT asynchronously which is certainly troubling and it doesn't state this remains the same w/ FSX. But generally this article suggests drive access is the main culprit of audio related stutters. So this triple begs the question of how SSD's might affect this issue. If lack of asynchronous access exists w/ FSX, then SSD's might mitigate this somewhat. Perhaps the superior approach would be to pre-load all .wav files into memory before they're needed. I don't believe that is the same thing as having them loaded on an SSD, nor do I understand how to accomplish that task! If this is correct for large audio files, what about small ones? One can imagine little ones might generate a slight, almost imperceptible stutter, suggesting addressing this issue might be worth the effort. Thanks Glenn . . .

I forgot to mention that this article was written about FS9.I doubt that the handling of audio files is any different in FSX however. (I would be surprised if it was anyway!)
