Increased performance with XP service pack 1?

Featured Replies

Hi,I have held off of installing the SP1 for XP for ages because of the horror stories I have read regarding poor performance whilst using the SP.Last night I went for it and stuck it on, and I was amazed to see that my performance in FS had actually increased, I now get no "white" texture squares when changing to spot view. Why would I get better performance whilst others see a decrease in performance with SP1?.CheersDan.

SP1 itself should not cuase any increase nor decrease of performance. I saw a difference of less than 50 3DMarks (3DMark 2001) after updating. It's possible some out-of-date driver or incorrect system file got replaced when you installed the SP, which improved performance.

I also had a bizarre experience with XP. I had to reformat my hardrive recently. I installed FS9 before installing the SP1, the sim had sky high frame rates, but seemed to be moving at half speed. If I set the speed to 2X it actually looked better. I unistalled and re-installed FS9.... same thing.I installed the SP1 and the sim ran ok.Wierd.Dave

im sorry, why is that wierd, the whole point of the pack is to fix some of the issues with the system, why should you be suprised if performance increases?!James

Hmmmm, simply because there have been many reported issues with performance DECREASES and service pack 1.Dan

fair enough, but i dont think that it should be a source of amazement when it actually does what it's suppsosed to...James

When something from M$ does what its supposed to do, then that is a source of amazement.Dan.

LOL good one Dan!I am in the same boat, I put off installing it as well because of the posts about what it did to systems, guess It's time to install and see!Regards, MichaelKDFWhttp://mysite.verizon.net/res052cd/mybannercva1.jpgCalVirAir International VACougar Mountain Helicopters & Aviation[link:www.cgrmthelos.com]Cougar Mountain Helicopters

wierd because the sim was running in slow motion without SP1, that's all. It wasn't a performance increase, the FPS may have been reading 40+ but the thing ran in slow motion and made it unusable. Installing SP1 made the sim run at normal speed with FPS at my usual 15 - 20 FPS.No need to be sorry :)

Well, thought I'd give it another try, after finally finding the magic formula to fix my CTD's, which were mainly landclass & memory problems. Found my FS Genesis landclass beta file also in my Scenery Addon folder, as well as in the Scenery/Base/scenery folder, where it should only reside. Removed it from the Addon scenery folder. I also increased physical memory from 768 to 1024 and increased virtual memory as well. No CTD's since doing both.Installed SP1 again and my FPS were cut in half, as before. Don't know why. Removed SP1 and back to 30FPS, locked at 30. Running great now on my lowly 1.4 Athlon.Chris
