Thinking of getting a second monitor

Featured Replies

Currently I'm running FSX on my main PC described in my signature and some time ago I got myself a simple HP Mini netbook where I'm running addon programs like Active Sky, ServInfo, IVAO IvAp, Aivlasoft EFB etc. Was a bit tricky to setup but then all has been fine but......since my HP Mini netbook doesn't really have the muscles needed to run some of these applications effectively I discovered (especially EFB) I'm thinking of moving back to run all programs on my main PC where I do have the muscles needed but I would still like to visually keep these addon programs "on the side" of FSX sort of speak instead of having to constantly ALT-TAB in and out from FSX hoping it will not everntually crash on you.So...my question since I have ZERO experience running on multiple monitors is will I be able to run FSX (in fullscreen mode) on my main monitor (which in fact is not a real monitor but a 40 inch Samsung LED-TV if it's of relevance) and then "drag" the other programs I mentioned above over to my second monitor and manage them there by simply moving the mouse pointer from my main monitor where FSX is running over to this second monitor?

I looked into this as I have 40 inch Sony Bravia LCD running main FSX and notebook running AIVLA EFB and charts etc, I too am looking at another monitor, I don't think the dual thing will work unless the displays are the same size because the resolutions would be different, however I'm only having a stab in the dark there. I was told by a pc guru to get a cheap large tv which is HD then run fsx on that in 1080P. As my LCD is not clear with cockpit images until I zoom in. If you have any luck let me know also if you run two monitors I'm also thinking FSX needs to be in windowed mode. I am going to hook up my new big tv to fsx maybe plasma screen ???? Then HDMI MY BRAVIA to the notebook for a bigger monitor. Also did you have ASE Networked on your laptop I'm having awful trouble the program runs but the fsx tab on the right corner of the main screen is greyed out. Any ideas I've looked at the manual still confused hop I've helped a bit, Wayne.

The IQ is great on my Samsung but then again it's a LED-TV so maybe that is the reason. Just thinking out loud here but I don't think the actual size of the screen matters but rather that both your screens must be able to run the same resolution. Too bad if you're not able to run FSX full screen using two monitors because I ran FSX in windowed mode for a long time and prefer to run it full screen to get rid of that ugly and unrealistic title bar at the top of the screen when running in windowed mode.As for ASE yes I have it networked but can't recall I had any real problems have it work, I suggest you drop by the HiFi forum where I'm sure you can get help setting ASE up in a networked running mode. I'm running ASE, IvAp and EFB in networked mode successfully.

Hi Richard,as long as your just running Apps on second monitor, It can be different size and different resolution, and can run in full screen mode.I have main screen at 1920x1200 (24"). another 15" one at 1600x900. for gauges, and a small LED tv 5" running 600x480 for GPS.just set them up in display properties, and also in FSX.The only time they all have to be the same, is if you are using TH2GO or eyefinity etc. etc. and want one view over multiple monitors.Ron.

So I can run a second tv then Ron for apps and the gauges is that right? Fsx will run in full screen? What do you recommend tv wise I want HD as I believe the NGX IS GREAT IN 1080p? Cheers Wayne

Hi Wayne, shouldnt be a problem, I cant help you with a choice, because I use monitors for main views, using a GTX570,I also have an old 8400 Nvidia card to run the GPS screenwhich is only 5 inches, designed for in dash use for a car, runs on 12 volts. It's a TFT TV with max res. of 640x480, works well.heres a pic from a previous post by January, showing some one using different monitors.Ron.

I'm running 42" Plasma 1920x1080 as my main display ans a second widscreen 15" 1633x768 for my instrument, on single 560iT, no problem or what so ever, was trying to hook another 15" through TriplH2go but I got a "Out Of range" message, and so far it doesn't work ...Yair

I bought a second monitor but experienced problems since I'm running FSX in full screen and at the same time want to run other programs on the second screen in normal windows mode like EFB and ASE so I ended up with connecting the second monitor to my Netbook instead to simply get a bigger screen and then my Netbook is networked to my FSX computer. This setup works really great except my Netbook struggles a bit when running all my addons especially EFB. I upgraded the Netbook to 2 GB RAM but that didn't really help much...I think it's the week CPU that is the main culprit.
