Need up to date thoughtsI am using fsx sp1 sp2 accel with an i7 965 3.2 @ 4.0 stable, fsx is ok but not great. ( asus rampage 2 extreme mb )I am going to build a new rig this month:Recommendations pleaseThinking 2600k or 2700k - on air hopefullyWhat MB would everyone recommend?I think I would prefer Asus, just because ive been working with the Rampage 2 Xtreme for a while and sort of understand itThoughts?Peter

I'm thinking you should wait for Ivy Bridge. It would seem nonsensical at this time to ditch the 965. Why not wait and see what she has to offer?

Or, wait for IB so you can get the 2500K at a discount! :Big Grin:Cheers,- jahman.

You are not going to get much of a performance increase in FSX gonig from an i7 965 to an i7 2700k. I upgraded from an i7 960, which is pretty much the same performance as the i7 965, to an i7 2600k. I went from 39 fps to 44 fps in the same that I created scenario. I didn't feel that it was worth it especially since I didn't get much money back from selling my old stuff. So going from an i7 965 to an i7 2700k would be like going from 39 fps to 45 fps in that scenario that I created. Is that worth it for you to upgrade? The only upgrade that might make sense is upgrading to an i7 3930k and an X79 chipset based motherboard iF you use software that utilizes more than 4 cores very well, otherwise I recommend that you wait for Ivy Bridge.

I came from a i7 960 to this rig. The thing that is helped most is the lowest FPS experienced. I was happy with my upgrade, but I made that upgrade 8 months ago before Ivy Bridge was truly in sight. To say the performance increase from the 1st gen i7 to a 2nd gen i7/i5 isn't marked would be inaccurate. There was quite the performance jump. Don't get my above statement wrong.

I noticed that you have your 2500k overclocked to 4.8 GHz. Are you comparing stock speeds or overclocked settings?

Good question. My 960 rig was overclocked to 4.0GHz, the most I was able to get out of her. My 2500k is faster at stock speeds than the 960 was overclocked.

Yeah, without overclock the 965 and it's 3.2 GHz is close to the 2600K. Both overclocked the gap grows. a 30-40% easily
