FS2Night (survey)

Featured Replies

Hi all,I've seen less success with FS2Night than I had anticipated. The vision was to really do something with the night environment that was innovative and exciting. But, unlike the Airport Environment Upgrade series, FS2Night has fallen off the charts. http://library.avsim.net/esearch.php?CatID...scen&DLID=41120 I'm toying with the idea of doing a new version in the hopes that it will take-off. The trouble is, I'm actually pleased with the original. It really came out the way that I'd hoped. A new version would be a ton of work, and I'm not really sure what direction to go in.With that in mind, I've decided to try and get some feed-back. Is FS2Night really not meeting with expectations, or did it just get lost in the library?Any feedback will be very well received, and help me decide if I really do want to get in there and give it another shot. It's a BIG project, and I don't want to get my hands dirty if I don't need to. It's hovering at right around 10,000 downloads, so there's a chance that it may show up on the charts again, but it doesn't seem to be moving much. Any thoughts?Speak your mind folks, and we'll see what we need to do. :) Thanks everyone! Almost forgot! There WILL be an Airport Environment Upgrade 6, and if need-be an FS2Night 2 in the same package. I figure this way, you will be able to get it all at once.

Chris,I actually have no clue what you are trying to say. Are you dissatisfied with 10,000 downloads ? I thought the number was very high. Or are you having concrete ideas how to improve on your previous work ? I would say night flying is so important for some of us that proper night lights practically have the same level of importance as daytime scenery. Michael J.

Hi Chris,I really liked the US lighting, but I had some problems with european cities. For example, fly over Berlin, and you'll notice large squares because the textures don't seam correctly. Also, it was a little too much in places I think ... the coronas were a little large and bright. This is meant as constructive criticism, I really do appreciate your hard work :) -Daniel

I still run it and think it's probably the best jst now. However if i was to pick one bad thing it would be the way some of the light look in europe. They are sort of big orange blobs, i would personaly have liked them to be smaller and less pastelly in colour. If you could get them to have more of a shine it would be great cause they just sort of look a bit cartoony at the moment.Thats just my preference, i'm sure other would disagree.Other than that i love it and thank you for the hard work you put into it!cheers,Callum

Hi chrisi really like fs2night as it is..much ..much better than MS default.:) :) ...also really like your Airport Enviroment upgrade.both of these are in my list of MUST HAVE fs2004 ADDONS.. thanks again chris best wishes steveUK

Thanks for the input guys! :) It looks like the ground wash, or the "blobs" are the recurring discrepancy. If I were to do another version, I would certainly focus in on that. The trouble is, honestly, I didn't enjoy doing the night upgrade quite as much as the AEU series. I REALLY enjoy working on the airport areas. If there is to be another FS2Night, I'm really going to have to take a new approach. It would be an awful lot of work for such minor changes. The planned Airport Environment Upgrade 6, wasn't originally going to happen either. But I've realized that there are some pretty major discrepancies in the MX (v5.0) version that I wasn't previously aware of. For instance: Airport concrete surfaces are normally laid in 25' squares. This alone would have been enough, but there's a groing list of other things that I'd like to address.10,000 downloads IS quite a bit, and I am very thankful to those who downloaded it. I just want to see if I can't get something out there that approaches the success of the AEU series. Who knows, the original FS2Night version may still catch on.Thanks again! :)

Hi Chris,If you want an idea of what nights should look like, take a look at MegaScenery as I personally feel they have come the closest to capturing the look. Having flown many times at high altitude at night, I can attest things are not nearly as bright as depicted in flight simulator. Most colors are washed out at high altitude and replaced with an overwhleming look of sodium vapor lighting. A dull pinkish-orange if you will. At 35,000 feet, you dont see great big blobs of red or green light coming from store front signs etc. In fact, you really have to struggle to make out anything of this nature at that altitude. I think Chris Willis' textures are pretty good as well. But I think if someone were to really capture "the look of night", we all would be willing to pay for their texture creation.By the way, I too enjoy your airport ground textures and thank you very much for them.Michael

Thanks Michael. :) Have you given FS2Night a try? If so, what are your thoughts.
