February 29, 201214 yr Hi all,I have received an ATI graphics card today (HD 5770) for use in my rig with FSX, and as I am returning to ATI after a long time, I was wondering whether it is better to;1). Set specific AA and AF values in the ATI Catalyst Drivers, or,2). Whether it's generally agreed to be better to "let the application decide" at the driver level?I know the answer to above for nVidia cards but would love to hear views for ATI/AMD ?Many thanks,Stick. February 29, 201214 yr Author What's your CPU model?Hi,I am running a i7 2600k with 16Mb DDR3 RAM, Win 7 64 bit, and the card is a ATI HD 5770.Many thanks,StickEDIT: @ jahman, thanks. Yes I'm running Bojote's tweaked CFG via that tool. Thanks. February 29, 201214 yr I used to have HD 5770 and found it a bit short in performance. If budget allows and store is willing to cooperate, add some extra bucks and look for something in 67xx or 69xx series. HD 5770 is with the CPU you have, the bottleneck of your system. Fly S A F E ! I 'upgraded' to the HD 5770 from a 8800 GTS G92 512Mb, mainly because I wanted the 1GB of VRAM, and my 8800 only has 512Mb. However at present, I am suspecting that the 8800 GTS (which I ran slightly OC'd) was arguably faster! The issue I am seeing at the moment is not one of low FPS; FPS are nice and high, but unfortunately I have micro-stutters that I was not seeing with the 8800. :(Thanks. February 29, 201214 yr Hi Stick,This question is better suited for the hardware forum where we techie guys tend to hang out. I suggest you post it right here:http://forum.avsim.n...ds-and-drivers/Kind regards,
February 29, 201214 yr UUUUUUUpsssss, I do sincerely apologize to administrators&moderators, I got carried away and posted where I shouldn't 80P@ StickI can't agree with you about 8800 being better than HD5770, some of your setting must be wrong. Also pay attention to Bojote's tweaks, on some systems his setting simply don't work as expected. Revert back to "out of the box" settings for both fsx.cfg and factory GPU drivers setting and see if there's any difference. But, still it's a pity having such a powerful CPU paired with graphic card that's, basically not bad at all by performance/money, but simply doesn't make a harmonic pair with the CPU. Another factor here are the hard disk's. Slow disks can also play roll in overall FS X performance. If data required by graphic card and CPU can't be delivered fast enough, you'll also experience stutters or any other kind of unwanted behavior. Fly S A F E ! Andrej Drobun http://www.slo4fsx.si
February 29, 201214 yr Author Hello guys,Firstly, apologies for posting this is the wrong section. I simply wasn't aware there was this (great) Hardware section of threads. :smile:Will know for next time. Now, adr179, I did some further tests and you're correct, the HD 5770 is giving around 30% more frames than the 8800, and also because it has 1GB GDDR5 memory, instead of the 8800's 512MB DDR2 memory, all textures load much faster, especially in HD textured planes such as Carenado's.But the issue was a micro-stutter, making the 5770 feel like a more laboured experience.Anyway, I solved the issue! :smile:When I looked at the CFG that I had got from Bojote's automatic website, I noticed that good old "TEXTURE_BANDWIDTH_MULT" was set at 40.Now I know this isn't FS9 and the days of setting values like 400, but I tried setting the value at 100. Perfect!! ..... Microstutters completely gone.My tests were in Orbx PNW, at 1S2 Darrington, in the RealAir Duke (piston). So I guess the ATI card just prefers a higher TBM value, at least in this type of scenery, and at my settings. Thanks for the support guys. :smile:Stick Edited February 29, 201214 yr by Stick David. >> i7 2600k, 3.4Ghz, (3.8Ghz TurboBoost), 8GB DDR3 RAM, ATI HD 5770 1GB, Win 7 Home Premium 64bit. >> FSX, REX, GEX, UTX, Orbx FTX AU, NZ, US, FlyTampa, UK2000 Xtreme, PMDG, RealAir, MilViz, (some) Carenado, Flight 1, Simcheck "%20alt=
